Thoughts on Law School?

I have a BS and MS.. thinking about getting a Law degree.

i wouldn't quit my job, I'd do a 4 year part time program at a Tier 3 school..

but having another degree and more job options would be nice. I'm fairly sure I could pass the California Bar.

when did you think about this?
Kinda a change from Tele Com

I spent a week with about 5 Lawyers on my trip to Canada. They are all Patent Attorneys that started out as Engineers. They said I am analytical and can argue both sides well. I also remember shit like crazy. All key things lawyers need.

Plus, they make 200K+

Wow. How could you balance school and work full time?
That's some serious schooling...
That's some payday :eek2:

I would do it part time.. hence 4 years.. and tier 3 schools are not that rigorous.. not sure what my job prospects would be like.. but I like school.. I like degrees.

what does tier 3 mean with respect to quality/reputation?

i don't want to go back to school, but if i did consider law school,
i wouldn't go unless i were accepted to very good school.

i wouldn't even apply unless i scored above a 170 on the LSAT.

Tier 3 means its not all that competative.. not in the top 100.

its all about passing the bar and getting some decent work experience.

I could easily nail 150 on the LSAT.. goal would be 160+.

170 is high, if I got a 170 I could get accepted to a top 10 school with my gpa (3.7)

Just what the world needs, another lawyer.

My ex used to study law....didn't do much for our relationship. If you think you can do it then why not?

Two thirds of attorney's would choose another career if they could. I have a JD and never practiced, started a whole different career, half of my law school friends envy me.

So part time 4 years equal what? 6 years total? Just to make 200K+?

You can make that on your own now with the education you already have.

I tried getting in for 3 years straugfht and couldn't.

It was the years that the school has since been sued over unfair admittance practices...

I was an Honor Grad while taking Honors courses and majoring in Chemistry...had an LSAT score of 162

it's useless. You dont need that to prosper since you already have a BS and MS. As JavaGuru said most lawyers dont even like their job. I'm the best example. Have a degree in law but dont even practice and I'm so happy things are this way :)

I have 25 or so JD's working for me. Most of them came to work here because they got sick of being at law firms, hourly billing, asshole partners, etc. We also spend about $15M per year on litigation, though the lawyers we deal with actually try cases...litigators and patent lawyers are different breeds.

Here's a dirty little secret: a monkey could be a decent lawyer. I have a few apes here and as long as they do what they are told, we all make money.

If it won't harm your career, then go for it. I don't think you'll have a lot of doors throw themselves open because of a tier 3 school, but many times you can get ahead because of a collective body of knowledge you have amassed....and a law degree could be a part of that.

I do think you look at a career decision wrong when you say "I could make $200K if I did XYZ....". You really don't know what doors can open and what is out there. If you are always looking for a higher pay day then you're going to miss out on the REALLY big ones that come with the patient accumulation of knowledge and experience.

Good luck bor.
