This question has come across my mind as of lately. I reflect on why
most of the college students my age write in general. For most it is an
exercise in crafting ones explanation of a particular subject matter that they
may be studying in order to regurgitate what they have just “learned” from
books or heard from the professor. This exercise is fine if it were simply a
means to an end. And that end is becoming a person who can successfully
portray, and share with others there unique point of view, as well as going
on a personal exploration of what a subject means to the writer on a
personal and more reflective level.
Writing as I see it can be a powerful vehicle in exploring ones own
thoughts on a very nuanced and personal level, in essence an exploration
of who we are, and how to go about changing things around us that we see
wrong. Modern purpose in writing for the average student seems to simply
be a product to be produced, or an exercise in repitition for the sake of
reproducing what one has just “learned” from books or a professor for the
benefit of garnering a good grade. We are rewarded for repeating
convention, and massaging the status quoe for the benefit of fitting
in………….in other words conforming to the backdrop of our society. There
is plenty wrong with our present state of affairs, and writing should be a
vehicle for us to smash through the barrier of convention that we are
imprisoned by.
There are several obstacles as I see it that come in the way of a new
breed of thinker, and old progressives that wish to teach this new breed
with a helping hand. We have the abyss of ignorance that is so prevalent
among the masses of this country. The sad thing is that people are not
inherently ignorant per say, it’s just that they have been born into a system
that has poorly educated them, and has planted within them a system of
beliefs that revolve around selfish ends and base morality. Too these
people a trip to Wal-Mart represents the pinnacle of civilization for many in
this country, literally thousands upon thousands parade the isles of
Wal-Mart, and truly think that...."hey this is it, this is just great" our society
is sick from the educated consumer ala' Nordstrom’s.......down to the
depths of the varietal Jerry Springer consumer... our society resembles a
bunch a children on a perpetual quest in the pursuit of toys ( aka goods)
and happiness to them is showing there toys to others, in the hope of
seeking validation through purchase, while condescending on others who
cannot buy what they "have” this is sad, sad, sad..
For me writing about our present state of affairs helps draw out the
problems of our culture and hopefully this will provide solutions that
one-day address the situation that we are in and at least solve part of it.
Writing for this purpose is at a disadvantage in regards to reaching this
population for the only vehicle available to us is the Internet, and a handful
of publications, reaching the national stage via the press of popular media
is a virtual impossibility.
Even in the class room we are at a disadvantage we are bombarded
by conservative or liberal propaganda spewed out from a select few
authorized to teach us this serves only to balkanize a new breed of
potential intellectuals, which thus sets a new breed against each other in
the game of combatant intellectualism, not cooperative sharing. Then on
the outside, away from the ivory tower of intellectualism our culture is dead
and it revolves only around materialism, manipulation, and insincerity.
Nothing of civic duty, responsibility, or integrity exists in popular culture our
common person in this country is about as educated as a doornob thanks
to the ever so centralized media that essentially controls the very identity,
agenda, and consciousness’ of this population...........so to try to reach this
mass of people in the hopes of getting something grass roots going is
almost impossible. Because they do not possess the information or tools to
liberate themselves from the prison that they are in because they simply
have not been furnished with the intellectual tools to do so, and second
even if they were in some degree it would almost be impossible to reach
this group on a national level because again reaching this audience on a
national level is almost impossible
There are so many problems due to the deliberate actions of the elite
who have access to every vehicle of change and communication all for the
benefit of themselves, their ideology, and their will and pursuits. If life were
a chessboard we would simply be a pawn on a board that they own, and
control. They want to forbid abortion, they want to forbid stem-cell
research, they want to abolish client-attorney confidentiality, they want to
read your email, they want to regulate people's sex lives, they want to
punish entire families in public housing if one kid is found with a joint, they
want to re-corral everyone into a box called "family values," they want to
relax the separation of church and state, they want to spend zillions of
dollars fighting a useless global drug war in the interest of health while they
call guaranteed national health care a commie plot. They claim to advocate
State's rights...and then they try to block a state's right to define legitimate
medical practice. If you don't agree with them you are giving comfort to the
enemy. That’s what they tell the masses that we try to liberate along with
ourselves. So we have the elite against us, and sometimes the masses as
well am I cynical NO....searching for answers yes...........
I will use writing and communication some how to undo, or at least move a
stone or two in the right direction before I pass...
Before I let the state of affairs get me down, and I could see my pain on
the faces of others as well that I love and trust to resign is to feed the state
of affairs that we criticize to give in is weak and unjust to the world and
ourselves. I choose to fight, we must choose to fight, and the written word
can help us do this, if not for actual change in our life times, at least a
record should be written for maybe just maybe a future generation may
discover what we have tried to do.
