Ok, watching the movie Johnny Mnenomic (sp?) I was presented with a dilemma on the idea of brain implants.

Ok, say you could have your brain wired to hold 320 gigabytes... You could download virtually anything you could ever want to know instantly. YOu could download any type of computer programming and instantly be a computer guru, or download millions of text files and data on airplane flying and instantly be a pilot, or.... etc.... you get the idea. BUT THE CATCH.... is once they did the implants, you would lose ALL of your childhood memories. Whether they were good or bad or whatever. You would not know where you were born, lived, went to school, etc...

Would you do it?

Yes I would definately do it because my childhood memories make me sad that it's all gone and over and done with and I can never ever have that magic again. If I didn't have them to recall, a great aprt of me would be free and happy that I don't have to dwel on it anymore.

by that rationale you wouldnt be the same person (anyhing you learnt in your childhood would be gone)

but if you ment just the hippy-shit stuff where you bond with friends etc.....it would depend on the format of the knowledge. but yes, i think i might just do it, there's so much good you could accomplish in the world with that instant type of knowledge

the human mind has been rated somewhere in the 1 Petabyte range of storage capacity, 1petabyte=1024 terrabytes=2x10^50 bytes=2x10^53 bits

all we need is a way to interface the brain and the machine ;)

If you're a religious person and there was a way created where we could "interface" with a machine to make our brain learn/retain information, able to truly alter pre-existing memories & personalities without an artificial storage device used, would you look at life as if you actually don't have a soul? That the human body is actually only an organic machine?

FUCK NO I wouldn't do it.. My past is what makes me who I am good AND bad shit.. If you take that away I no longer exist.

Why not just download my childhood memories and then copy them back to my brain after wiring it? It would be impossible to be able to wire my head in such a way that I can hold 320 gigs without being able to retrieve information beforehand. Kind of like saying "sure we'll install that new OS on your computer but all your files will be lost."

Anyway... if for some reason it were possible and the full memory could not be backed up, then no, I wouldn't do it. My past is what makes me the man I am. Who knows what I'll be if all that is erased.

I think I'd ask to be euthanized if that happened. I don't need my childhood memories to know that I don't want that. =)

:lmao:

conservatives/republicans wouldnt allow it (euthanasia) :D

It would depend upon the circumstances of my life at the time.

I'm pretty sure that the human brain can hold a lot more than 320Gb.

Simply because most people recall visual events more often than text.

Good question. On one hand you could "instantly" become a surgeon or doctor without ever going to college. On the other hand you may not recognize your mother if you walked past her at the mall.

If I had my brain wired like this, and I wanted to play Quake3 while I was bored in the hospital waiting room, would I have to get a 3d graphics accelerator installed in my head too or would the brain be sufficient? How much do you think it would cost to upgrade my RAM?

If you think that's funny, wait till you see what happens to your ass when Windows gives you a BSOD while you're behind the wheel.
