Thinking about swimming to Cuba.....

Starting point is Key West, distance is 90 miles. Has it been done before? If it has been done before then I will lose some interest.

Anyways.....I will need a spotter boat to haul me out if a shark bites me and also allow a place to sleep. I figure this would take 3-5 days depending on currents helping or hurting.

Yes, it has been done before. By a woman too. I can't think of her name, she died last year I believe. In her 70's. Not sure how old she was when she did it. There have been some men who done it as well.

the odds of having problems with sharks is pretty high, buddy. A spotting boat is very necessary. The most likely shark that you would encounter is the oceanic whitetip, which is very dangerous.

I'm not surprised, I figured the Florida Straights with all the fish would attract a lot of sharks. Isn't it called the Atlantic Whitetip? I got charged by one while my group was conducting a shark feeding. He looked at me, seemed to get excited, arched his back and charged with breathtaking speed. Suddenly veered off and narrowly missed my head. He never opened his mouth so I figure it was a dominance thing.

All I could think was "stay calm" and "oh shit."

Not a good idea. Three guys tried this together in 1970. Two of them got hit by sharks on the trip. Only the third made it to shore alive.

They also weren't completely "clean" swimmers. They used swim fins.

I used to live in Florida, would periodically see people trying it... and trying to come up with anti-shark ideas like swim cages.

How about to and FROM Cuba WITHOUT stopping AND naked?

Nobody's done that before I'm sure.

Man, fuck that. Sharks are scary. I mean, just think- you're swimming in an ocean over deep water. You can't see anything coming at you, and you're not in your natural element. The sharks are. The fact that a very large, very fast, very voracious animal that has evolved over millions of years to be a super-efficient killing machine can come right up underneath you and absolutely shred you with a jaw full of razor sharp teeth, and you have no defense and no way of knowing that it's coming, is absolutely terrifying. That's straight up nightmare material right there.

Go buy the book, "Shark As Predator, Man As Prey" and check out the section of shark victim photos. Read some of the shark attack stories. It's scary shit.

Goddamn, sharks are evil motherfuckers.

Yea...OK, you guys talked me out of it. Sounds like about a 50/50 chance of being shark bait and I would hate to do it in a cage.

I was planning on using fins BTW....I've done currents that pretty much required fins unless you were OK with 1/2 mph while busting your ass.

Some people call fins cheating, I can understand that. I like fins because they work the muscles much heavier, especially my free diving fins. If somebody thinks those fins make it too easy, I challenge them to propel XLG fins for an hour. Its somewhat like pressing 10 pounds for an hour.

When feeling energetic, you can literally leave a wake with large fins. The next day your legs will let you know too.

You COULD swim an equivalent distance in a pool and get sponsorship that way, if your reason is to raise cash - call it yrou "shark free swim to cuba" and tell all the local papers about it.

Or you could swim across Lake Michigan I guess (in a wetsuit, I would recommend!).

I did a triathlon in a wetsuit. It worked well in the pool but was terrible for the actual swim. Somehow it filled up with several gallons of water. The band that was supposed to minimize this actually served to keep it trapped during the race.

Pools and Lake Michigan? Somehow the Caribbean sounds more attractive.

Testboy, have you thought about making the trip in a kayak. Last summer I took a solo kayak trip through the Sea of Cortez for two weeks. I highly recommend kayaking vacations, great stress reducer. Also, if you take a kayak trip make sure to bring along kind buds and a glass pipe. Great times:D

Oh man....that is a good idea. I was going to do the Sea of Cortez before but could not decide whether to use my boat or my Zodiac (rubber raft with outboard). I have a couple kayaks but I like to bring a ton of gear for all contingencies.

Definitely deserves more thought.

you need to look into one of these things I saw on the discovery channel that divers use.

it's a little box, on your back and when you push a button, it wraps you in an electro-magnetic pulse that scares sharks away. It works great according to them. Look into it

Thats cool for divers but I doubt that I would see many potential attacks in time. Sharks are fond of coming in from behind. A wary diver can look for this during a typical 30 minute dive.

distanced, yes I saw that Discovery channel episode. The electromagnetic shield seemed to be very successful. I would defininitly look into this. Did any of you guys see the episode on shark week "Air Jaws". That episode showed how Great Whites were able to launch themselves out of the water in a attack on a dummy sealwhich was dragged behind a motorboat. It's scary to think that an attack like that could be possible on a swimmer, surfer, etc.

There are some good photos of that available at the Monterey aquarium in Monterey, CA. One of the top aquariums in the world. The photos are in the gift shop, $50 each and printed with a printer. Ugh, photos tend to look livelier.

Testboy, yes divers have less to worry about in relation to shark attacks. It seems that sharks are more wary of divers as compared to objects on the surface in which they have a huge advantage in terms of a successfull attack.

I HOPE YOU DO TRY IT. I ALSO HOPE YOU DROWN.
