Thin line between dedication and obsession?

I've been weight training seriously now for 2 years. I quit an unhealthy-addictive lifestyle associated with narcotics for another (fitness) that I THOUGHT would be a good change.

The thing is, I think about my training/eating habits 90% of the day. I think it's getting to me. I get REALLY irritated when something comes up that strays me away from my schedule. . . I lash out at loved ones (turned selfish?), I skip college classes, work, important events just so I can stay on track with the eating and training. I've dropped almost all my other hobbies for this.

I'm thinking of seeing a shrink, but I know all they're gonna say is to try and quit bodybuilding. . . seeing as my situation is quite similar to those that suffer from anorexia.

I'm just confused right now. . . just want to know if anyone has gone through the same thing and how they handled it.

someone whose seen what he's seen should reply to this.

have you considered medication for OCD? SSRI's are used for anorexia & OCD. they may be applicable in your situation.

IF YOU ARENT TRYING TO BE A PRO OR MAKE A CAREER IN BB'ING, THEN WHY SHOULD YOU BE SO HARD ON YOURSELF? I'M SURE YOU ARE IN SHAPE IF YOU EAT AND TRAIN LIKE YOU SAY YOU DO SO I'M SURE YOU CAN AFFORD TO SLACK OFF A BIT AND TRY TO ENJOY OTHER THINGS. JUST STAY IN SHAPE!!!

I've decided to talk to a professional(s); get a few opinions.

This is like a bad coke habit all over again. perfectionist styles.

I've been on Prozac and Paxil before, it didn't help. It actually made things more. . . intense.

thanks for the replies.

Effexor XR has freed me from similar anxiety disorders (anorexia, exercise-anorexia, and night-eating syndrome)

It keeps me from obsessing about things (btw... you'll love it even more if ephedrine is part of life, because it inhibits the reuptake of norep as well...)'

peace...
