there is a huge guy at the gym but he is not strong !!

does a muscle know how much the weight is? only the mind knows. if you work a muscle and really work it the weight will not be that important. only my feedback and personal opinion.

I would say that i fell for the strenght game and got litte growth fom it. Took me years to unlearn this. While strenght is imprtant it's not crucial for growth. I would say that moderate weight with good form to get an extreme burn in the muscle is where it's at, at least for me. This also forces me to do at least 10 reps in every exercise, sometimes 20 and the growth is much better with no joint and tendon pains.

I have also found cable stations to make my chest MUCH more full and better looking as opposed to flat benching. It's all about the contraction and burn for me.

Ok then fellas. What's the point of looking good if you have a lower % of useable strength? I guess everyone has different goals, but most of us have a better chance at being fighter pilots than pro bodybuilders. I am working my way into the strength side of things and just didn't see the point of the bodybuilding mentality. Not that most of us would ever need the level of strength of a world's strongest man competitor in our everyday lives, but at least it is a tangible goal, not some artistic concept that changes with the whims of the judges. After seeing a host of bb'ers attain their perceived peak and get the shaft,it just seems like most of us are chasing ghosts in the pursuit of bb'ing.

I guess my question is what are your goals then? With a strength athlete's mentality at least you have p.r.'s to shoot for that are not a shape, size or aesthetic value. They aren't subject to change. If you bench 400,500,whatever,that's it. And for those that say powerlifting/strength types look like crap...i could point out quite a few that i wouldn't mind looking like.Jouka Ahoula,Martin Muhr,Svend Karlson are personal favorites. You can't question the intensity of these guys at all. To me it is just sour grapes from a lot of people to say bb'ing is the be-all end-all. From a personaly standpoint i would rather hit the weights with short intense bursts than a finesse mentality. I guess it just suits my personality better. I think either way you are "bodybuilding" to a certain degree though. But personally,i don't give a rat's ass if you have 19 inch arms if you can only deadlift 400. My goal(still a long ways off) is to be able to pull that guy's arm out of the socket if i need to:) Looking good is secondary to feeling good in my book.

I saw this guy at my gym last week. This kid is maybe 120lbs soaking wet wearing blue jeans and a denim jacket. Scrawny lil bastard. Anyways, he set up his bench at about 275lbs. A bunch of us guys were thinking "holy shit, this kid is going to kill himself" and we were all on stand-by to help him out because he was lifting without a spotter. This kids arms we fucking twigs man. It made me sick just looking at him. Not that I am huge or anything, but this guy was a rail. Anyways, the lanky dude grabs the bar and throws out about 20 reps with breaking a sweat. I almost shit myself. I almost wanted to go check the weights to make sure they were real. He did three sets at this. I would have never guessed it.

yup, no point in looking good if some fat slob (for instance) can come along and knock ur block off.

Look big and massive will practically gurantee that no fat slob would even try do it.

Power perceived is power achieved.

Might be a good idea to make sure the fat slob doesn't deadlift and squat 800s before you piss him off though. Or at least make sure you run a lot faster. See,there you go..a reason for cardio for bb'ers:)

It just depends on your goals ...

Right now, I like strength better, but it doesn't mean I would knock someone who lifts to look "pretty."

I was never very strong either, but I don't make a habit of lifting cars everyday so I don't really care much.

All this talk about strenght is silly. What is strong? Compared to the average individual being able to pump out a set of pullups, dips and bench with 225 for 20 reps all without rest is pretty strong. Squatting 315 for 20 and deadlifting 400 X 10 then running a 6 minute mile is strong enough for me. What's the point of being stronger? I don't carry rocks for a living, i like being conditioned and flexible and looking like a BB. I do not need painfull joints and tendons later on because of ego lifting.

It takes more practice to build a good body using less weight, heave is just brainless. Incidentally Arnold was not ver strong and usually stretched the truth about his lifts. I have pictures of him squatting with 315 saying he was doing reps with 450, whatever, i can count plates. he did the same with his bench.

And as a last point who gives a shit about figting? Andrew Golota could knock just about any lifer out cold and can't bench 300. Grow up with all this who will kick who's ass, who cares.
