"The Secret" is a dangerous book

"The Secret," as described in the thunderously successful DVD and book, essentially says that you can get anything you want — health, wealth, love — simply by thinking it.

The book calls it the law of attraction: "When you think of the things that you want, and you focus on them with all of your intention, then the law of attraction will give you exactly what you want … every time."

Proponents of the secret say it's scientific: Positive thoughts attract positive things; negative thoughts attract negative things. You don't get fat because of food. You get fat because you think food will make you fat, according to the book's author, Rhonda Byrne, who would not grant ABC News an interview for this story. Her advice: Don't look at overweight people.

"After I saw it, I went and bought 30 copies," Oprah Winfrey said, talking about the book on her show. She's featured "The Secret" twice on her show in recent weeks. It's being taught in packed seminars across the country.

"If you're constantly thinking, feeling and acting broke, then you're never gonna attract prosperity in your life," said motivational speaker James Ray.

Scientists we've spoken with say that there is evidence that positive thinking has genuine power — for example in improving your health — but that "The Secret" emphasizes this power to an extent that is dangerous.

The DVD features a woman who says she cured her breast cancer by watching funny movies and visualizing herself healthy. No radiation or chemo.

"If you think that you're not going to get cancer, you don't want to get cancer, you believe you're not going to get cancer, are you not going to mammography? Are you not going to have a colonoscopy? Are you not going to quit smoking?" asked Richard Sloan, professor of behavioral medicine at Columbia University Medical Center.

And what if you practice "The Secret" and you still get sick?

"I think we get into the area here where you can start feeling guilty if you get sick because I must have been thinking wrongly about this," said Dr. Redford Williams at Duke University.

Proponents of "The Secret" insist they're not telling people to avoid doctors and that "The Secret" is helping people the world over. With millions of people buying it, "The Secret" is most definitely helping the people who are selling it.

lol
This is just as stupid as it gets. The lady at Nightline was right - make the book look like The Da Vinci Code and it will sell. I understand a positive thinking, but reasoning that ONLY thinking it can make the universe hand it down to you is ridiculous

Seriously though, there's nothing wrong with a little positive beliefs. But there's a limit. It's not the fucking Jedi Force or something.

There's truth to the positive/negative concept no doubt but I would not use "positive thinking" as a cure for anything.

Most people are sheep though and will believe anything they read or hear.

I watched a video the other day from one of the founders of the secret, and he said that anyone who thinks that they believe that ALL you have to do is think positive thoughts misinterpreted the secret. He said you have to think it but you also have to manifest that thought into ACTION or it will not work.

So, I think that they grossly misunderstand the concept.

yes, he says that in an interview, but on the DVD they sell it clearly shows that all it takes is thinking it and its gonna be yours. A woman was testifying that she had breast cancer and that in 3 months it was gone - without therapy! I mean, really....you get it

It's just like fitness and the magic pill.

People think they can take a pill and *poof* they wake up 12 weeks later in shape.

I'm all for positive thinking and reinforcement only because I know that negative thinking and reinforcement will only pull you down.

being positive is super duper ok. The book is sold out in the big bookstores in NY (I dont know if anywhere else too).

Well, the scientists and doctors are worried now that the people will take it literally

yeah
I'm suspicious of anything Oprah endorses and/or aligns herself with too

I think that positive thinking is a necessary ingredient to change. Without positive thoughts, the actions necessary to make change are just too arduous to keep muddling through.

It isn't the end all and be all. It is just one of the ingredients.

This reminds me of that religion that doesn't believe in doctors and believes in faith healing instead.

Si if a fattie thinks really hard she is slim and hot she will turn slim and hot even if she eats junk food and stays inactive?

The author deserves a Nobel prize for this scientific breakthrough
