The Official Andre Doria THREAD!

Hi guys...
On saturday I took a 2 hour ride (I got lost) to the suburbs of Sao Paulo city, in Brazil. My objective: to train in one of Brazil's pioneering powerlifting gyms, innagurated in the 30's by Andre Dorias father, Gerson Doria (former Mr Brazil and Pro BB).
When I arrived, I was confronted by heart-melting scene to any powerlifter: on one side, about 8 machines hogged up together. On the other side of the solid wall that ran through the gym, I managed to catch a glimpse of a mighty power rack, a professional bench (for bench presses) and 3 squat machines designed by Mr Andre Doria himself (will post a vid of them functioning). Pictures of Kaz, Cutler and the gang greeted me. The gym overall is extremely simple yet effective. No air conditioning (he keeps the huge doors open at all times, so it feels like there is no door at all), no music playing, no fancy chaningrooms (actually, they had smashed-in lockers and hanging lamps from the ceiling lol. Oh yeah, no soap too). But no one is there to wash your hands right?!

When Andre saw me, he came to the door to greet me. He told me to look to my left and my eyes were attacked by the gleam that reflected off literally thousands of trophies, from Brazilian to Russian events. As I turned my head and looked around, I saw something very encouraging and rare in today's gyms: pictures of Jay Cutler, Arnold, Mariusz Pudzianowski and other legends of the powerlifting/bodybuilding world. A particularly interesting picture was a promotional poster with Bill Kazmaier called "Feats of Strenght". This unique edition was actually autographed by Bill himself, during Andre's visit to his house in the late 80's.

Well, after recomposing my thoughts, it was time to train. There was a small girl, around 70kgs tops, squatting with 100kg for 1 REP. I was quite impressed by her body; solid and generous glutes and a very pretty face :P
There was also a dude benching who kept asking questions on how he could better perform in pro events, such as the South American Powerlifting Meet that will take place in September.

The gym had no mirrors at all, since Andre believes that they distract the lifter from concentrating on his form and his movement. Also, magnesium and chalk are offered by the bucket and the belts he had there were HUGE, THICK, Hand-made MOTHERFUCKERS! What I found particularly beneficial to one's performance is that people do not talk in this gym: they come, they train and they leave. It is not a get-together point and the only voices you hear are Andre's and those of people asking him for help. The silence is often broken by a symphony of steel. I had a great squat day that day and will return this saturday.

This is simply an introduction to the wonderful world of Andre Doria...
I shall be posting pictures of the gym in this thread and I shall redesign his web site, adding videos etc. Our biggest project right now is to make a video featuring many feats of strength inside his gym.

Sounds like a great place to train. A mirror should not be something that is in a gym so so I'm glad that you got to experience how much better a training session you can get without one.

Btw: 70kgs is not small for a girl :)

Saturday I am going there again and will post vids of:

1 - The machine he helped design in action (trust me, this puts and end to all those terrible days of having to raise or lower a heavy bar for your partner to squat, by unloading all the wait then loading it up).

2- The Autographs he owns.

3 - His trophies

4 - Some of the dudes and gals that train there

In iron we trust,
Erik

BTW, it could be good if in future, when the thread is up and running, we could make it a sticky probably?!
Maybe not, I dunno what the policies are...
But it would sure be cool to be able to check the shit here out... I shall be updating it constantly with news and stuff from Powerlifting in Brazil!

Awesome read. My gym doesn't have mirrors or allow talking either, although it does have soap (home gym ;)).

*taps foot impatiently for next four days while waiting for pics/vids*

vids of girl with generous glutes plz :chomp:

I wish there was a gym like that here. I work out in a Golds simply because it has all the equipment i need, and its a block from my house. Problem is, its choked up with gaybangers(dudes who flex in the mirror after every set). There are a few dudes there that are yoked as hell, but they talk more then they train.

Great story. I think it's great that a gym has managed to maintain itself since the 30s. It sounds like there is possibly a longer tradition of lifting in Brazil than in the US.

^^^ bundas :p

this should be interesting and motivating as well :)

BUUUNDAAAS!
HAHAHAHAHAH
Great post Silver HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA

Bw, someone mentioned a lifting tradition in Brazil being > than in the USA.

Its funny u say that cause Andre thinks the opposite...
Maybe the truth is that in both countries, it is an "underground" sport that does not get the attention it deserves. I think that countries that have strong tradition in lifting are China, the former Soviet Bloc and Russia. Japan is starting to catch up. But I guess to the Americas, it is more of a "secret art" lol :P

Cheers guys!

Crazy isn't it CS?
I saw pix of him and he was a skinny guy (like, what you expect for someone @ that weight). Crazy shit...

I don't knwo the age Silver... gonna ask him on saturday when I return to his gym
Btw, I will take pix and videos...
BUNDAAAS!

Oh... I wish him best of luck then.
Silver, tomorrow is the day for the big bundaaas.

However, I am scared shit since tomorrow is the day that 11,000 inmates are leaving their prisons for fathers day, and right now, we are in the middle of an issue regarding a very organized criminal faction.
So I am a little intimidated. But... I will take my chances I guess.

I am back.
I managed to take lots of pix + get a video of a girl squatting.
But... my bro forgot the cable for his camera in NY so I will get a Kodak store to put the files on a cd for me and hopefully, upload them by Monday evening.
Hope you guys enjoy!

Btw, how do I change the title to add stuff like: LAST UPDATED ON xx/xx??
Non-plats cannot do such thing?

You can't change thread names

You could get a memory-card reader and take the flashcard out of the camera to get the video and pictures into the PC.

It looks like you took a cue from EF with the obnoxious ads. ;) I just bookmarked it and will be checking frequently.

lol- I was looking for the Go Plat button just to get that pop-up out of the middle of the page.
:freak:

Guys, please understand that the add over there is not of my doing. It is simply the add that .cjb.net places there for their "free" re-direction.
I am very sorry for this, I am well aware that ads are annoying. However, I do not have the cash to spend on proper hosting yet, since this web site is a starting project. Once it gets going, maybe Andre and I will migrate it to an ad-free .com address, with decent hosting. Up to then, bear with us.

Videos of athletes will be placed next week, when I get my camera's cable
Cheers,
Visit soon :D

We're just giving you a hard time. It's an interesting site but I don't understand Portugeuse so I'm over-visually oriented. I need to learn to adjust.

Right now it has not much to it... I am adding stuff daily although I will be away for a week or so.

However, I plan on creating an english version very soon +D
