The Rise of the New Confederacy: How America-Hating Right-Wingers Took Over the GOP
The rhetoric of Michele Bachmann, Sarah Palin and Rick Perry about the “real America” is not imagined: They and those who oppose them live in different Americas.

The Rise of the New Confederacy: How America-Hating Right-Wingers Took Over the GOP | | AlterNet

For the Confederacy that now dominates the GOP, truth is solid and fixed and divinely embedded in the structure of the universe. Humanity’s responsibility is to accept and believe the truth rather than test ideas against actual experience. The Confederacy’s obsession with “originalist” interpretations of the Constitution–a twin of biblical literalism–is the classic example: truth must be eternal, universal.

Pragmatists and progressives defer to experts and professionals. They expect truth claims to be supported by evidence that emerges from research and testing. They put their faith in this process, and in the communities of inquiry–the disciplines–legitimized by secular institutions of higher education.

The new Confederacy rejects that process wholesale. Its leaders and authorities are the spiritual descendants of the conservative Christians and charismatic radio preachers who broke away from religious modernism in the 1920s and 1930s. For these leaders and their followers, faith justifies–and verifies–itself. You don’t believe an idea because it’s true. It’s true because you believe it.

This is why, in the “real America” of Bachmann, Palin and Perry, it is self-evident that cutting taxes increases revenues; the founders were evangelical Christians; evolution is bunk; climate change is a hoax; the United States has the best healthcare system in the world; we can transform the Middle East into a garden of democracy; Kenya native Barack Obama has slashed the military budget; the war on drugs is worth the cost; and so on. These are all leaps of faith. The new Confederates flat-out reject or ignore any counter-evidence, because they have their own fount of truth. FOX News is the obvious example, but decades before the rise of FOX–going back to the early 20th century radio evangelists–conservatives had been quietly building their own media and networks for “truth” telling.

Rick Perry Decks the Halls with Boughs of Homophobia

Quotes from his latest ad

"there's something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can't openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school."

as president he would "end Obama's war on religion" and "fight against liberal attacks on our religious heritage".

He's a good case for the need of a better education system in this country. Stupid people will vote for stupid people. We don't another stupid President, especially a radical nut job like Perry.

Now, back to the war against Christmas... :)

Sounds like an ER quote..

wtf, i wouldn't say something like that

i don't really understand the argument about not having geys in the military to be honest.

I don't understand the whole not being able to pray in school. If you want to pray, pray. who is going to stop you. what, do they want to pray on a loud speaker. stupid if you ask me.

Rick Perry is stupid, I can't believe a guy as douchy as this gets votes from people.

I am watching the debate. Santorum, Bachmann, and Perry don't seem like very bright people at all. Ron paul is the only guy I trust debating. He is one smart guy.

I really liked this quote too:

The Confederacy’s obsession with “originalist” interpretations of the Constitution–a twin of biblical literalism–is the classic example: truth must be eternal, universal.

I find it entertaining that the same people who are so gung-ho about reinterpreting and broadening the otherwise restrained powers of the constitution also bitch when the special interests completely take over the process.

Anyone who is excited about making government bigger and more broad need to figure-out they're playing right into the hands of whoever has the biggest bag of money to spend on lobbyists and political campaigns.

no offense to you bro cause i believe you to be an intelligent bro, but do your credentials stack up to these unbright folks?
-perry flew c-130s for the air force, left as a captain
-bachmann is/was a consitutional lawyer, graduated with honors
-santorum got an mba then a law degree
bunch of dumbasses huh?
anyone of them has more life experience and intelligence than Obama

What an absolute crock of liberal hating bullshit...still not going to change anything the messiah is done for, pack his backs he's hitting the convention circut along with his fatass wife

The elephant in the room is Gingrich. He's smarter than the entire White House team (Barry included) put together.

How dare you!

Lart threw a successful party last week!

What's happened, is that the Right and Left have gone to ultra-extremes in opposite directions. I no longer can align with either side, but one thing's for sure: I will not align with any party who thinks that continuing social programs and raising taxes (or not reducing taxes) on businesses is the answer. It's the reason we're where we are in the first place. So I'm a right winger there. But on the other hand, I can't align with a party who think that it's any of the government's business whether abortion is right or wrong, or what the sexual desires of the military might be.

We need to back off on the extremism... Dems and Repubs alike!

Charles

There is something strangely confounding and cognitive-dissonance-inducing about people whose CVs indicate that they are high achievers and yet they come off as complete imbeciles.

They come off as imbeciles to you because they don't toe your political line...I'm guilty of this with Obama.

Did you watch the debate?
If not STFU :)
Rick Perry, "when I was a 27 year old boy" lol

Also your statement would be saying that I am smart enough to be president.
I never sad that. I watched the debates, I can have some kind of say. If you did not watch it you are speaking out of ignorance. They could have said some crazy shit and you wouldn't know. If you watched it then I will STFU myself.

I don't know enough about you to even reply. I am not a genius, but I do have an opinion. Anyone who would vote for those people or defend them are morons to me.
Just my opinion..

I was agreeing with you. Perry, Bachmann, and Santorum come off as moronic. I was merely stating that it's disturbing how imbecilic they seem, compared to their resumes.

I disagree with Romney and Gingrich too, but I'd never slag them off as idiots. Now, in the case of Gingrich, I may view him as the embodiment of evil, but not stupid. I'm not egotistical enough to see everyone whose opinion differs from mine as morons.

And then voters take sides with these extremists, even though our own views are much less extreme. I don't think that either party really represents where there constituency is at these days.

Oh my B.
By the way I never said that Newt or Romney are dummies. I actually think they are very intelligent, I just don't trust them. The same way I feel about O'Bama.
If blagovich (sp) got caught selling O'Bama's seat, I wonder how much Barry had to pay for it?

When will people realize that this shit will never end. Democracy and the 2+ party system itself perpetuates it. It's about time society accepts the fact that it's impossible to please everybody in a country this diverse where everyone has the right to bitch.

barry was elected, so he didn't have to swindle the way blago did.
blago was outright selling the seat that didn't have to be voted on untill the next election.
i think a bigger concern is how much did obama know about this backdoor dealing, i'm sure he knew something though we'll proly never know

Ya, those guys run in his circles and he knows plenty.
I actually sort of liked O'Bama when he ran for president.
Now I feel like a total dumbass for giving him any support at all.

Michele Bachmann was asked (like everyone else) to pick one person on the stage that she has learned something from.
Her answer.... She said that Herman Cain taught her something!!!!!

that's why i was liking palin cause she was cut from a different mold.

Agreed, some of the smartest people were not known as academics. (Steve Jobs etc.)
I honestly felt inferior to the academics for a long time, I guess because I listened to society. I do not any more, I respect them for their accomplishments, but I also understand where my strengths are. (entrepreneur/manager)

notice how hard the est media/dems piled on palin for not being smart (i.e not attending the right ivy league schoools)...yet they love dumbass hollywood morons and treat them like the smartest bros out there.
