The Nazi Houserules of my Landlord

Robert Jan

New member
I signed a rent contract for a year starting september 1 2004.

Today I received a list of the rules of coöperative inhabitance there.

1. Keys
Every renter receives one front door key and one key for his room. these may not be copied or given to third parties under any circumstance and no visitor is allowed in the building when the renter is not present.

2. Room
Except for the renter himself nobody is allowed to spend the night in the room. In the price the costs of only one person are included. Should somebody spend the night by exception, I wish to be notified of this beforehand and I must receive 10 euro's per night per person.
No visit may last longer than 23 hours, or include more than 2 visitors.

3. Kitchen
Only the renters have access to the kitchen. visitors are not to enter, neither may renters cook for a visitor. Dishes are to be washed immediately after every meal.

4. Shower
Only the renters have access to the shower. no visitor may use the shower facility. Do not warm up the bathroom prior to using it, it will be well warm enough if you turn on the heat when you go in.

5. Furniture
The rooms are completely provided with furniture, bringing in or replacing furniture damages the narrow staircase, is unnecessary and prohibited.
No holes may be drilled in the room's walls.

Somebody doesn't want their renters to get laid.

There are many more rules, but these are the only ones that don't speak for themselves and are to be expected in any house.

I do not regret signing, its still a sweet deal, the furniture thing is true these rooms are cool as they are. I only pay 250 a month, all-in, no further expenses and I'm in the center of the town center.

Do all landlords for students say this shit?
Do you think these rules are flexible?
Do you think the other renters ever break them?

Is your place 100% students? I live off campus in a 'normal' apartment (normal meaning middle class, students, welfare people and pretty much anyone) and we don't get any rules anything like that. Maybe the drilling holes in the wall rule but thats it.

It's all students.

I'm just going to do exactly what she says. I'm going to call her up when I have a girl over and tell her I have a girl over and pay her 10 bucks.

All the other renters' parents live much closer to this house than mine.
Maybe if I explain that when I have friends over, they pretty much have to spend the night, she will be more leanient.

another way to screw with this rule is that I'm the only renter that will stay in in the weekends. Nobody will know if I have all the people over I want.

As a former landlord I would call these reasonable.

To Answer your questions.
Yes , No, Yes.

All these rules are desinged to protect the landlords property.

The reasoning that I only pay for 1 person is nonsense. If I have a relationship, sometimes I'll spend the night at hers and sometimes she'll come over to me. The average number of people remains the same.

Also for wearing stuff out, contract states emphatically that the room is to be left in it's original state and any repairs or cleanings that need to be done are to be paid by the renter.
Anyway we'll see...

I looked around in one of these (all completely identical) rooms of course and it was some girls' and it looked like Martha Stewart's fucking room. no mess nowhere.

I'm worried I'll have to be a celibate model renter in this house. I'm an 18 year old male student, I hope they dont expect anything silly.

If all else fails ill become the kind of broke ass mofo that always goes to their girls' house.

I also hope they don't mind loud music lol

Were you the kind of landlord that was constantly intimidating his renters?

Nope. I only showed up when they needed something fixed.
