The grocery stores in the US...

blueta2

New member
So was in NY state today for an appoint and on the way back, stopped at a Wal Mart Super center (we don't have those here) and a Price Chopper.
I do love doing groceries in the US since the selection is much better than in Montreal.
But what selection? I've not been to the US for 2 yrs and the selections have grown.
I had a choice of 10 different types of English muffins. They had an entire aisle of frozen pizzas. The cereal aisle was laced with the most sugar laded cereal I've ever seen. I also saw Strawberry shortcake pop tarts.
No wonder Americans drink so much soda, there was about 3 TRILLion differnet types.
All the chips come in MEGA SUPER SIZE OBESE BAGS and everything was like 2 for 1.
As excited as I was to see all this fun stuff, if I had that choice daily, I would have trouble being thin.
I noticed that for every thin person there was 20 very obese people.
The US health care system is making a ton of money of the negative effects from all this junk food sold there.
But this does explain Jnev's problem ;-)

Jnev lives in Utah, that is his only problem.

Tip for shopping in the US BLue, only shop the border of the store. All the crap is in the middle.

fug I did the same thing in San Diego 2 weeks ago LOL
I was dazed and confused by the HUGE selection I forgot what I went in for :)

Isn't it unbelievable???? You can spend an entire day in there.
It was a blast!

lol. Reminds me of when I went to italy. All I had there was the px or the outside stores where I could not understand much cause it was all in italian.Any how me and my friends used to bitch cause we wanted to go to walmart nearest one was in germany, obviously I never went to germany just for walmart...Well the day after I got home I went to walmart, I must have been in there for like 4 hours just walking around looking at everything, including stuff I did not need...Lol

and the stuff is so fun!

I got 8 bars of dove soap for like 4$. Up here, that would be 10$ and now that the cad dollar is at par, I cashed in today

Blue, dont ever make the mistake of going to Walmart again. Bad choice right there. That place is trash. I'm sorry you had to experience that.

My favorite activity in the grocery is to take a visual inventory on what people are buying. I can understand why so many people have weight issues when 1/2 their shopping cart if jam packed full of junk food. I always feel sorry for the kids tagging behind fat mom and fat dad in the lard ass section: bakery. I often think their future will be junk food cuz they know nothing else. Very sad.

there is a natural foods store close to where i live and you can get so many different vitamins, and things. it's really wicked. i'm not talking about the crap you find at GNC.

Saw a kid who must've been 5 or 6 sitting in the shopping cart today pointing out to fat mom which cereal to get. Options were Cocoa Pebbles, Cookie Crisp or Count Chocula. Ridiculous! Kid never even got out of cart the whole time.

lol every Walmart I've ever been to is just gross. And I've been to lots. Of course Walmart offers a service. I just choose not to shop there because I find the store and it's clientele generally repulsive

Was the kid chubby? It's a form of child abuse to see such young children obese IMO.

I'd be willing to bet that his mom is too lazy to fix him a decent breakfast in the morning! Throwing sugar and milk in a bowl gotta be easier than cooking real food in the morning. Lazy idiots.

I'm coming to rescue him.lol

He's not eating crap 24/7 though. Many kids are eating crap for breakfast , lunch and dinner!

No, he eats a lot of fruit. But he doesnt like meat very much. But he will eat tuna so thats good. Been giving him tuna and brown rice since he was like 2.

The cashier at the store had no teeth and her fingers were very yellow from smoking.......but hey, I got dove soap for 4$, so I wasn't complaining.
This WalMart was actually very clean.......Better than the walmarts here in Montreal

I thought they pulled the wal-mart's out of Canada due to them trying to unionize...maybe that was just a few of them :p

I dont know. My kid eats Fruit Loops w/skim milk for breakfast and he's fit as a fiddle!

I think as long as he eats healthy for most of the day, a bowl of fruit loops is not the end of the world.
But the sugar content and chemicals in these cereals sometimes causes a lot of childhood allergies and or ADD.

You can buy an organic/low sugar version of fruit loops.

Both my parents worked 6 days a week. My Mom had 3 little kids and had no time to make anything, let alone breakfast. My sister turned out obese and my other sister and I were thin kids.
I'm sure some parents are super lazy, but I think in most cases, it's just being ignorant about food choices and being overwhelmed with life.
My sister fed my nephew a diet of sugar and total crap. This kid is now 17, very thin, but has had ADD his whole life and keeps failing in school. She doesn't get the connection.
It infuriates me.........but my sister also has a disabled child to deal with. She's not lazy, she is overwhelmed and uneducated about food.
Yes I try to educate her but she will total ignore me

I agree - also - the fucking aisles are too small and everyone is constantly running into each other. I fucking hate that place.

Hey pappa :-) How's baby?
Oh yeah, those aisles are super small. Well the one I went to yesterday, the aisles were larger than the ones here.
It's just that there are always so many ppl at walmart, every aisle seems jammed.

How did the testing go by the way? Do you feel it was worth the trip and did they have good news? *keeps fingers crossed for a positive reply from you*

So ? Having fun with canadian dollars ? Now that the CND dollar is at $1.03 you must rule in the trailerpark ! ;)

I remember the first time we went to a grocery store in MagyarOrszag. I asked my mother why the carts where so small and so few. People generally had baskets. They would walk or ride their bike to the store daily to get necessary items and only what they could carry home. You wanna talk small selection and poor? Even the hyuge store in Budapest were tiny compared to any US Shoprite , forget a Walmart or Target "superstore" at the time.

Is it just me or do ya'll think that Target is *nicer* than Walmart? That seems to be the general consensus, but I am not sure exactly why.

Oh yea... the Walmart brand of crystal lite is AWESOME!!! Their flavors taste WAY BETTER and about 1/3 of the price.

I love Target. It's much nicer than Walmart. Mind you, I've only been into the Target in Philly, so not sure what the others are like, but it's much cleaner.

Perhaps that is it. There seems to be a pecking order of acceptability with these types of stores.

1. Target - way nice/good quality stuff/EVERYONE goes there - no level of embarrassment. You are actually a "smart shopper."

2. Walmart - everyone has been there and no one is really embarrassed but stuff seems to be lesser quality. Still kinda cool to be able to buy nailpolish, scented candles, car wax, weedwacker, stationary, shampoo and walmart brand crystal lite at 3AM (in some states).

3. Kmart - wouldn't be caught DEAD in there. :lmao:

So Blue fit right in then...

The hell?

Walmart is nasty. I've only been in one and I wanted to bomb the place and cleanse the gene pool.

I go to Target when I'm in a hurry because Walmart is so packed

but I do actually kind of like going to Walmart - I never go because Target is easier but Walmart just has, well, more STUFF to look at.

So then it is the clientelle that is offensive and not necessarily that there is anything terribly wrong with the store itself (as in cleanliness, variety/quality of products, customer service)?

Both stores (Target and Walmart) are nice in Texas... or at least in the Dallas/Ft Worth area where I am. EVERYONE is nice here too...

I know this will most likely be TMI for some but damn, I couldn't get over how much less expensive the feminine hygiene products were in TX as compared to NJ. I was like, "Hell, I've been menstruating in the wrong damned state all these years!" :lmao:

They are not hell holes, they are places people who cannot afford overpriced stuff, can shop.
Never belittle the less fortunate, b/c karma will bring u there one day

I've been to a handfull of walmarts, and they are not all the same. Some are super trashy, some are ok. Target is a visually much nicer store, and the prices are compairable.

Wally World has the best Sam's Club plastic wrap ON the market! I have no idea how they make it better than Cling Wrap, etc., but they got it nailed!

I know! we have sam's club wrap here at the office, but I use the press and seal at home, but yes, it actually sticks - and not so much to itself.

LOL that is so gross, but you have that scent perfectly described, lol, my MIL actually walked up to the manager, and asked him if he knew that the store smelled. lololol!!! I have a KMART less than 2 miles from my house and I never go there, especially at night because the type of people that go there scare me, like they will hide in the back seat of my car or something. lol :worried:

They closed most of the SMELLY K-Marts around here. Target took most of their biz. away, Wally World too.

I like Target. Wally World is ONLY good for the plastic wrap- in my humble opinion.

I have ZERO CONTROL over how this site is run or handled...

I have always likened the chat board to *swimming with sharks* but there was a time when there were very stringent rules; shoot first and ask questions later. As the population grew and the site changed to pay so the rules changed, which is understandable.

It's really sad that a handfull of individuals (and I am not naming any names here so no one need step own and claim ownership of that particular shoe) seem to cause most of the trouble, but what can you or I do? Either accept that there always were and always will be a handfull of people who just can not conduct themselves properly or we can leave as so many others have in the recent weeks.

I ain't goin nowhere. :qt: .... that is, while the good people on elite outweigh the vocal minority.

Oh cut that out... YW just needs to be wrapped on the nose w/a newspaper most days is all. 'Course *making* a mod do it when they don't want to anymore isn't exactly the brightest course of action...

Come on... group hug. :chomp:

Group hug Blue.

I was only playing with you. You need to relax and not take everything so serious.

When you were going for your tests, I wished you good luck and hoped all was ok. That was a real issue.

When you talk about Walmart I think that is a topic people can fuck around with and joke with. Stop reading into things. Sorry if I upset you I was only playing around.

Do some of your own research and educate yourselves and then dispel my point. Your tone sucks!
I did medical research for 8 yrs and since becoming sick with two of my own illnesses (for 13 yrs) have done a ton of research. I have friends who are cancer researchers and some who are md's and nd's, I have enough info to know what I'm talking about.
So let me entertain your NEED for proof!

It's no secret that the food of today is laced with chemicals which cause MANY health issues. The rate of ADD and Autism has increased 10 fold in the last 30 yrs....as has breast cancer.
When the Mom's of autistic and ADD kids change the diets of their kids, they improve.
When they remove mercury (metals), yeasts and chemicals, and sugar kids improve.

here is ONLY One of the many chemicals that taint our food supply daily.
I have more, but you can do your own research.

http://www.margonaut.com/tartrazine.htm

United States

Reports of autism cases grew dramatically in the U.S. in 1996–2005. It is unknown how much, if any, growth came from changes in autism's prevalence. The number of diagnosed cases of autism grew dramatically in the U.S. in the 1990s and early 2000s. For example, in 1996, 21,669 children and students aged 6–11 years diagnosed with autism were served under Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in the U.S. and outlying areas; by 2001 this number had risen to 64,094, and by 2005 to 110,529.[20]

Nothing in any of those links shows any statistical testing whatsoever to show correlation or causation. Same thing with your twinkie thread.

You sound like someone who spends a lot of time on websites like mercola.com and the like. You're obviously free to have your opinion, but dont post it as science. There were no primary sources or even links to articles on pubmed in any of those links.

There is a lot of Medical Junk on the internet.

Stress causes more health problems than these chemicals, granted its not good to eat that stuff all the time, I had a friend who would never touch packaged ood products/ lotions, was a health freak, used to lecture me, who got breast cancer and died!

Just live your life but dont take anything to the extreme.

I think a bowl of cheerios for a kid, or even fruit loops is fine. People need to chill. Kids are not going to eat certain foods.

Breast cancer rates have actually dropped.

Autism is a scary thing. I do agree with that, and I believe that is helped by diet, not caused by chemicals but by cutting out gluten, which is in everything. Vaccinations too......maybe....who knows.

Like I said, do your own reseach and then dispel what I've said.
I don't even know what Mercola is?
I spend a lot of my time with my face in books, but thanks for trying to figure me out.

Breast cancer death rates have dropped not the the incidence of the cancer. And that is only b/c we have better screening and therapies now.

I agree, nothing wrong with eating some junk once in a while and I never said I thought it was bad. But there are some people (kids) that have diets that contain 100% of this sort of food.
Listen, I smoke 2 cigs a day, why the heck would I be preaching "all natural all the time"
I've changed my diet a lot over the last 13 yrs. I try very hard to eat foods with little or no chemicals.
I have an illness that has nothing to do with diet, but with good diet I can fight it better.
Gluten has always been in foods, so why are autism rates going up?!
I also think a lot has to do with the vaccinations also, but not the sole cause.
That is just my theory.

it's not my fault there's no real scientific literature in any of the links you posted. If this was such an important discovery I figure there'd be something in those links.

First off, I never said it was an important discovery. The sites I posted simply show that they are starting to link Yellow # 5 (Tartrazine) to ADD.
It's just an example of what we actually consume in our food. Yellow #5 is actually chemical tar waste used in tons of products. Eaten at high levels will kill. It's like saying, I baked this bread with a .0005mm of my feces so you won’t get sick or even taste it, do you still want to risk it or even eat it?
My point is that we, as consumers, need to be aware what we are consuming.
This is a fitness site, and we all work hard to be healthy.
When people were suffering from syphilis 50 yrs ago, they were put in mental hosp b/c there was no research and discovery to what this illness was. That doesn’t mean that illness was not real.
We are also brainwashed to believe Aspartame is ok. When it’s not! The sweetener is banned all over Asia b/c of its effect on health. Yet in North America it’s not.
Ask yourself why? Sure, no one is falling like flies as if it were anthrax, but there are so many “mystery” illnesses in North America and we need to be smart enough to know why.

Do not argue with Blue. It is a waste of time. Trust me. No rational thoughts just crap she finds on google to back up her claims. Trust me, move on. Not worth the headache.

And I would just like to add. My best friend Sue is a cancer researcher at one of the best cancer researcher centers here in Montreal. She works with some of the best cancer researchers in the world. She gives talks all over. She is actually the spokesperson for Gleevec (leukemia drug) you may have even see her.
Well she tells me that the talk in labs and with most cancer dr's is their belief that many cancers are caused from food additives.
Keep in mind, Dr’s also said it was ok to smoke 50 yrs ago because there was no research on smoking back then.
Most researchers and Md's believe cancers and et are caused from mental toxicity and chemicals. Many researchers are trying to get funding to research the effects of some food and non food chemicals.
My friend became a PDH cancer researcher b/c she was diagnosed with Leukemia and given 3 months to live. That was 10 yrs ago. She was a high school drop out when she got ill. And is now a PHD in cancer research

have you ever been checked for bi-polar?!
You're one weird dude. And be cautious, word is you're on very thin ice around here.

We are having an adult debate, which I know is unfamiliar to you, but maybe shut up and listen...you may learn something.

50 years ago there wasnt the technology to do research like now. People used to spend entire careers mapping 1 protein using X-ray crystalography, now it can be done in a week. It's foolish to think all we eat is good for us, but alarmism is just not sexy.
