The FCC is getting out of control

it's amazing how knee jerk things can be. terrorists fly planes into buildings - lose some civil liberties. boob gets shown on TV - start up the censorship bandwagon.

great.

It's a demonstration of how the truely powerless struggle to create the illusion of control by attacking the irrelevant.

That's just opinion mang. I like Howard, Springer etc. Millions of people share my opinion, million share yours. It's such a common thing that a proverb was invented about it

"One man's trash is another man's treasure".

The first amendmnet is supposed to render them equal though, and prevent exactly what the FCC has done. The FCC urinates all over the First Amendment on a regular basis.

Agreed, these are little more than opinions, which we're all entitled to.

What I don't understand is this...

Everyone's bellyaching about the fact that this country is rapidly spiraling straight down the shitter...which it is, there's no arguing that point. Thing is, much of our problems are a direct result of (hate to use the cliche, but for lack of better term) "the dumbing down of America." Sorry to say it, but shit like the H.S. show (etc.) contribute to this dilemma more than people are willing to admit.

There's the irony; out of 1 side of their mouth, people bitch because the country is heading down the shitter and they're forced to deal with mindless idiots more & more every day....but out of the other side of their mouth, they're advocating one of the biggest sources of the problem.

I can't think of anyone I've ever met who's I.Q has ever been enhanced by H.S. Seriously...wtf was so appealing about him? Yes, I watched his show a few times out of morbid curiosity, and frankly, watching him babble on like a developmentally challenged 4th grader doesn't exactly fall under my "quality entertainment" category. I'd sooner watch paint dry.

What concerns me even more is the fact that I hear people talking about shit like the H.S. show, Springer, etc. like what occours on those programs is part of normal, everyday life. Go ahead, tell me that shit doesn't have a direct impact on the mentality (or lack thereof) of its viewers.

Perfect example of the "sheeple" problem in this country if I've ever seen one.

As Dennis Miller used to say...

"that's just my opinion....I could be wrong" :D

Personally, I don't listen to Howard Stern for intellectual purposes, it is strictly entertainment. And although I do hate springer and any/all reality shows I don't wish censorship to take them off, ratings should do that. If it insults your intelligence, then WTF are you doing watching/listening, turn it off, change the channel.

You seem to be glad that he is off the air, but that is not the point.

The point is that our rights are being taken away right under our noses.

There are a few ways to look at that. "Down the shitter" is your opinion too, though it is widely held.

Seondlty, what is the basis that radio programming, or society in general, is supposed to achieve any intellectual goal. Our country was unique in its founding, and individual liberty is the cornerstone of that uniqueness.

Part of that uniqueness is the ability to be a shithead, if you so desire, as long as your shit-headed-ness does not abrogate the rights of others to exercise their liberties.

The role of entertainment does not have to be to enhance the IQ's of people; people have the choice to pursue intellectually challenging entertainment or not. The greater principle is that the choice should be the individuals to make, not a sociey saying "we know what's good for you".

Afet all, why do people watch sports gaems all weekend long? Why do they drink? Smoke? Etc. All legal, all not that enhancing, all favoritesof most Americans.

Individual liberty sir, even the liberty to be a lazy lump of shit. :)

The reason why the FCC has this power is because the US accepted the tenets of socialism decades ago. The bullshit idea that the airwaves are "owned" by the public allowed the government the authority to regulate it as it desired in the "trust" of the public.

Clear Channel and the FCC are reacting to public pressure, which in the former case is acceptable. Clear Channel has the right to alter its programming to conform to market demands. A competitive market will allow for the void to be filled if the demand is present. The FCC has no right to regulate what the public desires; this amounts to government control of information.

It is telling how much outroar this is creating, yet talk about income taxation, Social Security, Medicare, etc. and people are more docile and willing to take it in the ass. Howard Stern is a greater priority than their own property.
