The condo building that EATS people.... (mystery thread)

Not really eats them... but one of the greatest mysteries in Ft Lauderdale currently.

Ok...... over the past three years 4 men have gone missing from the same condo building. Never to be seen/heard from again. No clues, nothing. Here are the facts.. and weird this is the uncanny similarities...

'02 - Guy from unit 422 goes missing. June 29
'03 - Guy from unit 202 goes missing. June 22
'03 - same day as above Guy from unity 212 goes missing June 22
'04 - Guy from unit 1232 goes missing. June 27

Notice how they all lived in unit with two 2's in the number?

More similarities....
They were all reported missing between the time frames of June 22 - June 29.
No forced entry into their homes was evident.
Left behind was their car and house keys, car was still in parking lot, and their wallet was left on the bed.
All four wallets were found on their beds. No money missing, no credit cards gone, nothing. And all four of the men were never known to leave their wallets on the bed - as in laying on the covers.
All had been out clubbing the night before, but actually returned to their homes previously.
Drugs were found in all apartments, even though friends/relatives/employers swore the victims never used drugs. Also from the nature of the drugs and how they were found, detectives have always said they were planted there to be found for some reason.

So.... anyone want to buy a condo? Cheap? I know a great building.

I think I saw one of those cases on tv...

One dude came back with a dude he met in a club or a boyfriend or something... he woke up, went for a walk in the middle of the night and never came back... even the security cameras did not see any evidence of him leaving the building.... as you said he left all his stuff behind...

Best they could figure is he went to visit someone in another apartment in the building and never came back...

Yeah... that was on Unsolved mysteries. It was directly about this case.

The disturbing part was that they or someone else was in the apartment and planted the drugs to make it look like drugs were related to the disappearance. However, in a police interview, it was revealed that while there were drugs in the apartments in each case, the drugs were for some reason unuseable. Maybe they hadn't been cooked up or unwrapped or whatever. It is like someone left them there to throw them off the trail.

Personally, I think it is someone in the building that is killing them and chopping them up and removing their bodies bit by bit.

all of them are even numbered units, so i would look for some feature about those units that make them similar - ie all on the same side of the building, all accessed by the same service shaft/garbage chute/laundry chute, same stairwell etc...something taht would make access, or escape from the rooms easier...

same timeframe in the summertime makes me think that someone is on vacation - either the killer, or a relative/friend of the killer in the building, something like that. all the victims are male, makes me think that it may be a sex crime. I would also think about profiling blood types, organ matches, that sort of thing - since butchering people for organs is a growing business.

anything else specific to the building? nearness to, say, the gay part of town? brothels? who actually owns the building? the condos?

sounds seedy

thad make a great horror movie. like the killer lives in the boiler room or something and drags the people down through the walls

I think it is a building tenant that is luring them to his apartment, killing them with something like a poison, chopping them up in the bathtub and then dumping the parts in the Everglades. The last images of these guys were all coming INTO the condo building, there are no images on the security cams or from the front desk of them leaving the building (cams run 24 hours). We know they came home... but then what?

Also, if you left your condo, just to walk down the hall... you would take your keys with you right? Their keys were left behind.

Are there common characteristics among the victims?

Age, height, weight, hair and eye color, social group, etc?

This is cool.

Do they tell people those tales when they move in? Don't you have to disclose if there was a murder or suicide on a property? Or in the case of a condo would it only apply to the actual units themselves?

That's very bizarre.

Yes, very bizarre! Maybe I don't wanna live on my own next year after all, lol.

def some one that lives there ...probably has a torture padded room in his condo to slice/dice these men up....then sends them down the trash chute....only in this case is the Patriot Act warranted to search this building....

Actually, the trash shoot theory has been thrown out. The police came in and used some kind of ultraviolet detection thingy to determine if any blood was present in the shoot. Nothing showed up. Of course, the killer would have been smart enough to encase the bodyparts in bags. Duh!

If you offered me $100,000 to spend a week in that condo, I'd have to think about it.

If I said yes I'd be wanting to carry a gun 24/7.

Have there been any more dissappearances since 2004?

No, they just stopped.

It looked as if it were some one doing it only during that time period each year, maybe an out of towner visiting or something.. but nothing could be found that was remotely a clue.

Either it was an impossible coincedence, or the person(s) behind it moved on to another city or some other fate (death, accident, jail, etc..) restricted them from returning to the area.

Fucking spooky as hell. Last year they had a refresher article ran in the paper just to see if it sparked any new leads. They released the video tapes that showed the guys coming home by themselves, but there is no video tape that shows them leaving the building after their last entry.

A serial killer wouldn't just stop. Possibly if that was the case they moved away but I would assume they went through everyone's units in the building checking up on them. Definitely fits a serial killer MO though.

No security cams in the halls obviously. Imagine if you lived in a unit with two 2's in it. I'd move.

The serial killer idea is pretty much the accepted theory about it. However, I don't think it was that lived in the building. I mean if so, why wait until June to do it? I was thinking that it was someone living nearby that somehow managed to gain unnoticeable access to the building through a blind spot or something. Or a serial that was always in town during June for a convention or something.

They have cams in the parking lots, the entry foyer, and all elevators.

they would see the guys park, come in through the entrance, get in the elevator and get out of the elevator on their floor, and never be seen again.

Can we get a link to the article for this?

If you have links to news archives (I don't) I am sure there would be something online about it. The last mention of it was an article a year ago.

thats sick ... There body parts are forzen somewhere. Could the killer be a women. and no forced entry or anything borken has to be posion or some sort of drug or a fight would insue

A handsome bachelor who had just completely remodeled his condo, Mark Douglas Jackson, 35, vanished from his penthouse suite of the Drake Tower three years ago on June 27. He has not been seen since. The same goes for Barry Block and David George Rhodes, who have been missing from the Drake since 2003. At least one more resident is suspected of vanishing as well.

Fort Lauderdale police Detective Jim Curcio this week has been calling family members of the missing men, trying to determine any whereabouts or news. The last vanishing incident occurred when Jackson unexpectedly left a friend and walked back to his condo at 4 a.m. after a night of partying.

Jackson's case has stymied investigators and sent shock waves through nearby Wilton Manors, where gays enjoy a majority representation on the city council.

Police twice drained a section of the South Fork Middle River cuddled next to the Drake, searching for Jackson, said the condo's manager, Bruce Tanner. Tanner grew to know Jackson and spearheaded a media campaign to solve the case, which was profiled on ``America's Most Wanted.''

``You would never in a million years think that this would happen to Mark,'' Tanner said.

Investigators found small amounts of cocaine, amphetamines and methedrine in Jackson's room, according to the police report. His friend arrived the next morning to find Jackson gone with no explanation. The friend has passed a polygraph test. Also noted was that Jackson had no history of drug use or abuse.
