the cicadas are coming this year.

i thnk i saw one here a week ago. Not too sure though. It was a bigggg fucking bug i can tell you that.

I remember when they came last time. I was either 12 or 13 and my friend from school invited me to sleep over at his house, and while I was there his parents made us stain this giant wooden swingset jungle gym thing they had. The fucker was huge. Ontop of the atrocity of going to a friend's house and being forced to do manual labor, there were cicada shells everywhere. They were stuck all over the swingset and I kept crunching on them on the ground. I can't stand creepy ass bugs, let alone the crunchy, hollow shells of creepy ass bugs. Now I'm pissed. I shoulda said something to that guy about it at our 10 year reunion.

Do these things appear in the south? I've never heard of such a thing

Maybe b/c the last time they appeared, I was only 7 :worried:

Mrs. D almost called the power company because of this worrisome electric sizzling sound she heard outside. It was cicadas.

We've got some trees in our backyard & I swear I think our dog can smell them. Every time we let her go out in the back yard she's got her nose buried in the ground for some God unknown reason. That's all I can figure...she's smelling them cicada's coming to the surface. I also heard that their supposed to be good bait for any of you bro's out there who like to fish. I haven't seen any yet but I know it's getting real close.

animals love to eat cicadas. I don't know why.

Also, cicadas turn up every year, its just that certain broods are HUGE, as is the 17 year magicicada that will appear this year.

These cicadas are centered around the MidSouthEast. From a diagram I saw, The nucleus of their range is in East Tennessee (Booya) and then spread say a state or so around each way.

I live in East Tennessee, but what is a nucleus? Is that good or bad thing?
Where are you at?
I remember those things from years back, they were everywhere here.

A nucleus meaning just a figurative center of their coverage across a few states. I am excited just because I can pretend I'm in a horror movie or something.

I'm pretty close to you if you live in Knoxville, which I think I remember you saying you did, but I could be wrong. But yeah I'm close to Knoxville.

Ummm, you guys do realize that they come out "every" year right??? True it does take them 13-17 years to mature underground, but they come out every year. So this years group went underground 13-17 years ago. The total number of cicadas in the future depend on how many females are killed or eaten this year before they lay their eggs. Just like this years depends on how many eggs were laid-hatched-and survived the 13-17 years of aging. The ammount is usually the same from year to year.

Here in central Illinois they do spawn in rural areas, but not as bad as they do in the country side. I can't speak for northern or southern Illinois as I haven't spent whole summers in either part.
