The Boss Said "No Money For You"

Just got turned down on a raise. Fuck!

*venting*

After 4 years with the same outfit, 10k under market average in my area -- if I was just performing my core responsibility -- I'm performing two extra jobs on top of it. I know they have the money. For a fact.

Taxes due. Kids to feed. House to pay for. Credit cards... Same shit as everybody else.

I'm gonna have to move to find a decent-paying job. Fuck.

You think he'd have the decency to tell me at the end of the day instead of the beginning...

If you are really 10,000 under market mid-point then I would start to look for a new job my man..

Our organization froze wages at a certain grade level and gave VERY mininal raises for those who performed well. Those who were rated as the lower performers were not given anything.....

How was your annual review? Did your boss tell you that you are meeting/exceeding his expectations? What was his reasoning for not giving you a raise?

I have. The market for what I do is very hard (and small) here. They know this and use it to their advantage. I've been reluctant to relocate because of the family and style of life here.

Actually, they love me, they love what I do and continue to blow sunshine up my you-know-what; their reasoning was that they are following company policy of not giving mid-year raises and that other businesses in the area that do what we do have laid people off over the last year.

He's telling me to keep doing what I'm doing and that they'll act accordingly at year-end. Right now, 7 months seems like an eternity...

This sucks my man, I have been there. Good luck, keep your head up. peace

It would be a lot easier if I had only me to think about; I'd go back to freelancing until I could find something solid. With a family (and kids specifically) it's much harder...

Thanks for the words man.

I'm sorry to hear that....do you think they will budge if yuo threaten to quit??

It is pretty crappy here too, everyone in my department got a 2.75% raise an are pissed! I got a 10%, but can't tell anyone so I have to play pissed too! It's hard because I am good friends with the others in my dept.

Mid-year raises? I'm confused...I thought most organizations did the April 1 increase thing...

I'm baffled, really. I mean if you're performing well, they should be willing to shell out at least a TOKEN raise for you....

Maybe talk to your boss about doing another review in Aug instead of waiting until December. You could explain that since you are performing above expectations, and taking on additional tasks above and beyond the normal scope of your position (or above and beyond your peers in the same position) you feel that a compensation review in August would be fair and appropriate, rather than waiting until Dec...

Good Luck! :)

Threatening to quit might work -- it's just not a tactic I can employ right now because I have no backup. If they were like "OK" my family and I would be completely fucked. If I was single, I would have already tried it. I know others here have used that tactic to their advantage.

I got a 3% raise (I was expecting more) at the beginning of the year, but it's not enough.

At least you got the 10%...

Well they do historically perform end-year increases. Just before X-Mas. I think it's really just an element of smoke and mirror that they're using to help justify their decision. I know a few have had mid-year raises though.

That's what I thought. I figured maybe they'd kick 3k my way as a sign of appreciation. I think they're convinced I won't leave, and convinced that there is nowhere for me to go in this market.

Well, I might. I've already explained all of that and supported it with materials, market average revues and samples of my work from each of the disciplines I perform. I think they're just not feeling me. My direct manager even went out to dinner with them and begged them to give me a raise, (at least that's his story), I know the people that I actually work with don't want to lose me...

Good Luck! :)

Anything you can do on the side to increase revenues? Maybe work out some deals with some people you know? I don't know your situation, but be creative and stuff just seems to happen.
