The Anti-Carb Crusade

I was just wondering why everyone seems to hate carbs so much. I can see that point when dieting, you have to cut calories somewhere, but what about when bulking? I've seen several posts saying that person A's bulking diet is high protein, moderate carb and moderate fat. I've also seen a post telling someone to eat 250grams of carbs when bulking. Why is that? I know I try to follow the 40-40-20 split. Although, recently it's been more like 30-50-20. Seems to me that if you want to up your calories, then carbs are the ideal choice. Not only that but they give you energy for working out and keep your body from using protein as fuel.

I agree with that. Carbs are great when bulking. Hell, when juicing and bulking, to add MASS, concentrate on only protein and cals. The juice will stop ya from becoming a jumbo fatty. You can always diet to lose the fat later.

I just realized this and my intake of carbs has increased by about 150g a day for a total of 400g. It's been about 1 week and i've gained about 2 extra pounds and my lifts have increased in weight as well. Only thing is that my carbs come generally from oatmeal, brown rice, potatoes, flax seed bagels. Nothing else.

Well, i don't know about "hating" carbs. I don't go for them on my diet right now. But i still look forward to them in ooooooh, about 6 months :D

carbs = energy when you workout
carbs = recovery after workout

carbs=a big fat a$$

That's bullshit! Number one, I got the concept of 40-40-20 from Arnold and no one has ever accused him of being a big fat ass. I don't know, I just forgot what numbe two and three was supposed to be. Either way, there is absolutely nothing wrong with carbs.

Cure- That's not a problem, dude. I get all mine from pasta, oatmeal and rice, too. All 500 or so of them.

arnold may have done that when off season but when he had to cut u know he cut the carbs. no one ever accoused him of being fat? i beg to differ. mr. girunda(sp) i forget his name . well when arny came to his gym all vic saw was a puffy overweight bodybuilder.(i forgot his name but he had book called the wild thing, someone should know how i was takin about...)

i do think carbs play a roll in bodybuilding and it can make or break you, but i also think to many of BBers diets contain way to much carbs and not anuff fat. drop the carbs up the fat and i say yourll look better. :)

simple carbs=fatass
complex carb=not in a huury to get fat but enough energy to get through a grueling workout then burns away or help maintatains muscle mass

Big Calvin, the reference you were making was from Vince Gironda, who called Arnold a Fat #$%. Carbs are beneficial but often play too big a role in most peoples diets. Most people seem to benefit from increasing EFA's while decreasing carbs, especially when eliminating high GI carbs. Also, Arnold's physique doesnt really make a good point b/c he took steroids starting at an early age, which turn the odds in his favor. You can make a lot more mistakes in eating and training and still look great on steroids.

Many valid points here!!

One of the trickiest parts of dieting is figuring out how many carbs one will need to fuel intense workouts...

But as far as I'm concerned, the average person (who doesn't hit the weights) grossly overconsumes carbohydrates. I realize that this is quite a generalization - but I can't help but feel that people have been more or less brainwashed into believing that FAT (as a macronutrient) is soley responsible for making people FAT. This is just absurd....

...of course I suppose we are now seeing a backlash in the form of a reverse trend these days - what with all of the carb-bashing that goes on....

Hey guys, I'm still rather new to BB and dieting. Can you give some examples of simple carbs and complex? It seems to me my favorite foods are carbs so I don't want to give up what I don't have to. Fats are a close second. Thanks alot
Kiki

Well, that was the point of the original post. I was wondering why people hate carbs so much when bulking or in the "off season."

Because people are generally more more opinionated than knowledgeable.

Assuming adequate protein intake, carbs are the foundation of a proper mass phase, period. There are very sound physiological reasons for this, which will be addressed in the 4th installment of my leptin article.

The same guys who bulk on 250 g of carbs a day are most likely the same guys who can barely bench press their bodyweight.....not to say that powerlfting is necessary for bodybuilding, but in order to gain mass, the muscles must be challenged and fatigued sufficiently.....that doesn't mean lifitng more than you should or lifting with bad form, but being able to push yourself, whether you're benching 300 lbs or 30 lbs......i doubt a person who lives on 250 g of carbs all the time has ever truly had an intense workout....
