teh barbell lunge: effective?

never did them, i feel awkward doing them. I'm a little tall too so it makes it harder to do I think.

can't really call it a barbell lunge then, can ya?

I'd call it a smith machine lunge.

Go do some squats.

For legs, squats are inescapable. And no, no smith machine squats, not half-squats, not leg press, etc. etc. Real squats. Probably the only real variation on squats is box squats, where you start with dead weight from the sitting position.

Once you accept the reality of squats, then lunges, step-ups and even <gasp> leg presses are a great supplement.

P.S. smith machine lunges? For some reason I can only envision that with someone also using that round rubber pad that covers the bar at the same time.

I do dumbell walking lunges quite often. Supersetting them with sets afterwards on the seated adduction machine. Yes, I am being serious.
 
I always have issues with my patellular tendon when Stationary BB lunges.......if I use DBs or the BB and step forward with each lunge I actually get a great stretch. I do 40 lunges at the end of my quad workout and that burns like hell.
 
IMHO, single leg work is often overlooked in the body builders work out. I've never really understood this 1 goal mindset. SIze, size, and more size. It's like nothing else matters, except size. If size is what your looking for, your not going to find it with the lunge.

If you want to be functional, than lunges are great.

Yes!!!

I just added a one legged lift as an assistance exercise to each of my lower body days. BB reverse lunges and single leg leg presses. The reverse BB lunges make my glutes fire like crazy.
 
It worked in this case.....
