Teenage diet

New member
Im 17 years old, 5'11, and 165 pounds. What the hell is healthy for a teenager? With combinations of weight training, and cardio...i wanna throw in a good diet to lose as much of the fat percentage on my body as i can. How many calories should i be consuming in one day? is it ok to eat a bag of chips? how often? i know there is 3500 calories in 1 pound, thats not a lot of calories, and a slice of cheese or a burger has a lot of calories. and what types of cardio should i be doing? for how long? i do skiing for about 30 minutes...and somtimes 15 minutes on bike after working out....thanks guys, later

guy.. 3500 calories is a LOT.

165x12= 1980 = 2000 calories daily.... give or take + or - 10%
Try to not go too much under or over that. If you are active, then consume more.
Big bag of chips? No
Slice of cheese? Try not too
Burger? Sure, but not every day... maybe a little cheat meal on weekends.
Try to eat things like chicken breast, tuna, beef for protein
Pasta + oatmeal for carbs
oils for fats.

Cardio... hit it 2-3 times a week - 20 minutes..
Do abs about 2-3 times a week as well.

If you ski, then i guess you can count that as 1 cardio workout... bike is nice too... nice to see some vartiation.

Hope that helped some... :)

there is no real answer to that, you might be 6% bodyfat and you might be 25% bodyfat, so it differs

due to your age, I would probably try 2500cal daily considering your metabolic rate and activity levels.
Do something simple, like 2g protein/lb of bodyweight and the rest should come from carbs and some fat. Maybe go from 1 - 1.5g carbs/per lb.

is it ok to eat a bag of chips?
depends on the chips

how often?
probably not too often if you're trying to shed bodyfat

i know there is 3500 calories in 1 pound, thats not a lot of calories, and a slice of cheese or a burger has a lot of calories.
yes, Burgers do have a high caloric count

and what types of cardio should i be doing?
30min ED (every day) 5-6 days a week
-try doing something fun like Bball or swimming....something that's medium intensity

i do skiing for about 30 minutes...and somtimes 15 minutes on bike after working out....
that's fine, increase the bike to 30min...skiing is probably not the best cardio

Coming from a teenager as well...

Heres a tip, if you are doing a three day split with cardio in the off days, perform your nutrition routine like this:

Morning: Wake up, drink water, 15 minute high intencity cardio (85% and higher)
Post Cardio: Whey Protein Isolate (of whatever variation) at 15 grams, dextrose or maltodextrine at 20 grams. Glutamine at 5 grams. Might wanna throw in some NAC, but be sure to include vitamin supplements like vitamin C, and B Complex.

Rest of the day: Low GI carbohydrates, and generally healthy, unrefined foods. Include protein shakes to supplement your protein intake. But do not take whey protein alone without any other proteins, as a meal. Take it to boost anabolic activity and blood aminoacidemia levels around meals that contain protein sources (like chicken breast for example). If you want to supplement with a protein supplement to increase your protein intake, find a protein blend. Casein/Whey/EggAlbumen/Soy would be useful. Be sure to include carbs and fat. For fat sources, stick to healthy oils, and stay away from saturated fats. Supplement with flax oil, and add olive oil.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

On the workout days (if you work out any time but the early morning), this is how it should go.

Wake up: High GI carb, whey protein.

30-45 Minutes later until pre workout : low GI carbs, slower digesting protein sources, healthy fat sources.

Pre workout: load up on some low GI carbs about an hour before. Take a pre workout shake of 15 grams of whey, and 35 grams of dextrose or maltodextrine. Midway through the workout, take another shake similar. Do not include milk in these shakes. Post workout, throw in some micellular casein, and a little more maltodextrine to keep the insulin spiked. Once the aminoacidemia levels in the blood start dipping from the whey, the casein should have kicked in.

An hour after the workout: Low GI carbs, and slower digesting protein sources. Include healthy fat sources.

------------------------------
Before bed for both days, include some milk with a protein blend. I prefer to get another shake ready for the middle of the night before I go to bed, set my alarm, wake up, drink it, and fall back asleep. The whole process takes less than a minute.

i disagree Mr X. Whatever increases your heart rate close enough to your maximal threshold is good cardio. This can be obtained by skiing.

PROBABLY NOT THE BEST...
Key words right there, I said it wasn't the best. For, sprinting can be more beneficial. You are trying to refute a point that I did not even make.

how could sprinting be more beneficial cardio if you could theoretically increase your heart rate to the same speed, and burn as many calories? The best cardio would be the one that he enjoys the most.

Do your research...
high intensity sprinting will NOT only burn calories during the workout, but will also speed up caloric deficiencies during the day (PC). PC you will expect to see an increase in lypolisis and increase in the metabolic rate.

I think you've been given pretty good advice so far. BUT... you are 17, and I doubt you're gonna put forth the effort to count all your cals and calculate macronutrient ratios (you're probably out chasing tail--which is perfectly understandable).

So, I suggest a KISS method:

1) Workout 4x/week

2) Do intense cardio 30 min 3x/week

3) Eat 3 meals using the the method of thirds: put meat on 1/3 of your plate, carbs on the other 1/3, and veggies on the last 1/3

4) b/w these meals, drink a protein shake with milk

No drinking. No drugs. Lots of sex. You'll be a very healthy young stallion.

Good luck.

Mr.X

skiing will do the same. the only differences between the two are the angles that the muscles are worked, if you are working at the same heartrate and burning the same amount of cals.

Im a regular guy. 42 around the chest. 42 around the waist. 96 around the golf course, and a nuisance around the house

SAYS IT ALL RIGHT HERE:p

What angles? What are you getting at? Your statment makes no sense. Read some research regarding high-intensity interval sprints. W/ low intensity, skiing fits there, you will only experience caloric loss during the activity itself. W/ high-intensity interval sprints, you will experience the caloric loss during the activity AND post-activity (PC) w/ a upward shift in the metabolic rate and bodily temperature.

YOU WILL BURN MORE CALORIES W/ SPRINTS THAN W/ SKIING (low-intensity assumed for most)....THAT'S COMMON SENSE....

skiing at high intensity will allow you to burn fat at PC as well. listen much?

No it's not...anyhow, this argument is futile, I seem to be debating w/ an individual that provides no evidence for his claim.
