This is an incredible an subjective perspective. IN 1970's people prophesized that there would be flying cars and quantum transistors (fully developed).
The problem with technology research is the NEED for it. There will always be progress as long as the financial support is available for further research. If we would have a space war, I have no doubts that the world's super powers would quickly build a vessel capable of flying all over our solar system equiped with the most power weapons ever designed. However there is NO need for it at a given moment.
It is said that when a new technology is discovered, it's applications increase in an exponential curve..... and then their potential is exhausted.... there is a need for further technology.
I believe the current genetics research will greatly influence medicine and health. The newly researched quantum transistors will allow for enormously powerful computers without the need for cooling systems (which is a huge wall for computer makers with traditional circuitry).
AT the end however, once again, it all depends on the NEED and DEMAND - and that will influence where we will progress. Things such as diseases, wars, personal enjoyment is what greatly influences the Demand.
