Teach me how to originally quote

Although I've been using this sort of bulletin board for at least 2 years, I still have no idea how to do a quote stating the original text of a poster before your post. I would be more than happy if anyone could direct me towards a webpage tutorial or instructional video that I could order online. I would love to know the secret behind how its done.
