Insite - Supervised Injection Site

What do you guys think about this? Junkies are allowed to inject themselves and provided a sterile environment, clean needles, alcohol swabs, and access to Nurses.

Over 1000 people have ODd since the place opened, but none have died. It is being touted as cost effective and it has health benefits.

Thoughts?

The point is to get them into a controlled environment where staff can start treating them. It was all free as well

They did this in Switzerland and was a complete success

Complete success? as in helping them along their path as junkies with as little risk to them as possible and maximum taxpayer expenidture? Or treating their addictions and getting them on the right track?

What cost more making drugs or paying for them to be in and out of prison plus medical costs? Plus switzerland said it was a success and they helped lots of people get off the drugs. Plus the ones that were using the program started to become part of society again, since they didn't have to pay for drugs they could start working again and going about their day. Then pop in for their fix and get back on with life, while the staff there start working with them.

I would be against public money going to something like that but if a private organization raised money to support it I can get on board.

You forget the mentality of the US vs Switzerland. That wouldn't work over in the US because of the different (not better or worse) belief system.

Vancouver's east side is pretty bad and was really ugly in the late 90's/ early 2000's. There's the cynical part of me that wonders if this isn't all about the $$. Is it cheaper to supervise injections and OD's then constantly using up the ambulance and ER services? It has the appearance of being progressive, keeps that much more garbage, like needles, off the streets and ultimately, may save the gov't a lot of money. Although ultimately, I guess it saves the taxpayers $$. I'd be interested in their stats on how many actually accepted the wrap around services and got clean.

A friend and I debate this in April when they were thinking of opening one in Toronto and you are correct. I did the research then on how many got clean not many at all it's more about appearances and cost savings than getting anyone clean.

Why would this be about getting clean? I would see that as a secondary / opportunistic benefit. I would assume that money would be the primary benefit.

East Hastings is one of the grossest place in the world..I have been there...I've been to a lot of third world shitholes and Canada has the worst street in the world...I have never been scared to walk in a neighborhood till I went there

and again...

wouldn't it be more cost effective in the long run if they let them die after they OD'd?

Get them in there, let them OD and let them die. Saving money all around. Brilliant idea.

Hello Canada is public health care it's way more than the saving of OD it also what comes with dirty needless HIV hep C etc. that cost tax payers a shit of a lot more than them ODing

ODing would SAVE the health system money is what I'm saying. Can't spend too much money on a dead person. Dead people have much less chances of spreading HIV or Hep C as well.

They come in, load them up and let them enjoy their last ride. Done. Next.

But they are more likely to get sick from and illness than actually OD

I got off a bus on East Hastings back in the mid 90's by mistake!! It was quite the experience and that was in the middle of the day. I was in my early 20's and was TERRIFIED!! I haven't been back there in years but makes me feel better hearing you say that too, Woot!!
