Supervised Injection Site in Vancouver

What cost more making drugs or paying for them to be in and out of prison plus medical costs? Plus switzerland said it was a success and they helped lots of people get off the drugs. Plus the ones that were using the program started to become part of society again, since they didn't have to pay for drugs they could start working again and going about their day. Then pop in for their fix and get back on with life, while the staff there start working with them.

You forget the mentality of the US vs Switzerland. That wouldn't work over in the US because of the different (not better or worse) belief system.

Vancouver's east side is pretty bad and was really ugly in the late 90's/ early 2000's. There's the cynical part of me that wonders if this isn't all about the $$. Is it cheaper to supervise injections and OD's then constantly using up the ambulance and ER services? It has the appearance of being progressive, keeps that much more garbage, like needles, off the streets and ultimately, may save the gov't a lot of money. Although ultimately, I guess it saves the taxpayers $$. I'd be interested in their stats on how many actually accepted the wrap around services and got clean.

I would be against public money going to something like that but if a private organization raised money to support it I can get on board.

A friend and I debate this in April when they were thinking of opening one in Toronto and you are correct. I did the research then on how many got clean not many at all it's more about appearances and cost savings than getting anyone clean.

Why would this be about getting clean? I would see that as a secondary / opportunistic benefit. I would assume that money would be the primary benefit.

East Hastings is one of the grossest place in the world..I have been there...I've been to a lot of third world shitholes and Canada has the worst street in the world...I have never been scared to walk in a neighborhood till I went there

and again...

wouldn't it be more cost effective in the long run if they let them die after they OD'd?

Get them in there, let them OD and let them die. Saving money all around. Brilliant idea.
