Such thing as TOO MUCH aerobic exercise?

I do 30 minutes of power 90's 'sweat' aerobic exercise in the morning before I eat ... should I do another 30 minutes at night? Is that TOO MUCH???

I am 6'0 and 260 pounds. I want to get down to 220 and then go serious weight training. 40 pounds. So 2 times a day is cool --- good to know!

YUp also a fan of early AM cardio , I just take in a scoop of whey and EC stack and hit it

Like I said, what is your bodyfat percentage? If it's already low keep the cardio at 30 mins in the morning. You'll be risking burning muscle. Find out your bodyfat percentage...:) Besides, late cardio isn't as optimal as early morning because you'll probably burn the carbs you ate before the session anyway, unless you refrain from eating about 3 hours prior.

Thanks for the help guys. Not sure what I would do without this place. My BF% is bad ... its probably around 23-24% .... as I said I need to lose 40 pounds!

Doing it 2x a day is not necessary. I think it is STUPID at this point. You should make your diet tighter, rather than ODing on the cardio. Excess cardio is not effective, in fact, it can start burning muscle tissue - especially if you are in a caloric deficit (cutting).

DIET is where fat loss comes.

Yeah ... but it is only 30 minutes, 2x a day. so 1 hour total. I am cutting pretty tight - Tuna, Lean Chicken Strips, Water (80oz or so), and veggies. I also take between 50-100 of whey protein a day - usually 20 min after the first workout. That is the right time to take it correct?

Are you also weight training?

Why add in 2 sessions NOW? What will you do when you plateau? 2 hours a day? Silly.

Let the DIET do the work for you. Diet is what makes the BIGGEST difference in a physique - not excess cardio. Cardio definately has it's place and is important in fat loss, but it is a distant second to diet.

Excess cardio will eat muscle mass when in a caloric deficit. This will lower your metabolism. Which will make losing fat VERY hard.

Water should be much higher. Try about 128oz a day - 1 gallon.

Whey is taken immediately after weight training. Not necessary after cardio.

Cardio and weights should, ideally, be in separate workouts. If not possible, do weights 1st then cardio.

What kind of veggies? Any starchy carbs at all? What about re-feeds (cheat meals)?

Veggies - broccoli, cauliflower, green beans

So I should stick to the 30 min I do in the power and wait till I stall and then kick in the 2nd 30 min??? Sounds good I guess.

I was told that it is nearly impossible to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time so I havent been doing much weight training at all except for 30 reps of biceps and 20 reps of swimmers (with dumbells).

Should I do cardio 1 day and then weights the next? Should I do cardio every day and then weights every other day? What type of weight routine should I do to lose weight (bicep curls, swimmers, triceps ... that kind of stuff ... and how much of each)?

No starchy carbs - should I add some?? I was doin the Atkins thing but I am trying to find any way to lose weight effectively ... I would like to be down 40lbs by June 1st ... so that gives me 3 1/2 months!!

you dont need to have double sessions of cardio at this time, 1 morning session of 30-60 mins will do the job, you want to save the double sessions for when your body starts to plateau with the single sessions. I didnt look at the type of cardio you are doing, but if you want to maintain as much muscle as possible while cutting the fat, you shouldnt be doing 30 mins of intense cardio, something light would be your best bet, such as a steady walk on an incline. Keep this in mind, it takes your body approximately 20 mins to burn off the glucose that your body has before it starts to burn fat, and also, if your heart rate goes too high, you stop burning fat and your body will actually tap into your protein stores for energy, that is why you dont want to get too intense with your cardio.

Here is what will burn fat, in order of importance:

1) a clean diet
2) weight training
3) cardio

If you eliminate weights, you are shooting yourself in the foot.

Your metabolism is partially controlled by genetics. But a large part of it is controlled by muscle mass. The more muscle you have, the more fat you will burn.

Muscle is built through weight training, not cardio.

Cardio in a caloric deficit and NO weight training = disaster for your metabolism.

This is a BIG misconception: "I want to loose the fat first and then start lifting"...

A balanced program includes all three components: Lifting, Cardio and Diet, from the start. They complement each other, so start lifting right away and get yourself a well planned diet.

I can recommend 125% you read Tom Venuto's book "Burn the Fat, feed the muscle" to get you jum-started in the knowledge you need.

Your case is very similar to mine. Check out how I started here:

and my results after 5 months:

Best of lucks, feel free to ask.

is burning 500 calories too much cardio? (takes me about an hour and 20 minutes)

I can burn 500 cal in 50 min .....

I think you are doing too low intensity. I would ramp it up a bit, and lower the time.

Of course, it also depends on your goals, current BF%, and diet. :)

No, not health-wise. Your heart is getting a good workout.

But for fat loss and muscle mass sparing, it isn't a great idea.
