styles of Martial Arts

Since exams are coming to an end this month and summer holidays are just around the corner i've been thinking of taking Martial Arts classes. However, I don't know in great detail the difference between the common ones.. ie kung fu, karate, mauy thia... etc etc?

can anyone care to brielfly explain, so i would have a general idea of what i'd be more interested in

1) Student > Teacher > Style . The most Important Factor is you , and how hard you work . The second is your Teacher and the quality of Instruction youre being Given - Remember , being able to FIGHT and being able to TEACH OTHERS to Fight are 2 different Skillsets . The only style considerations that MATTER really come back to the "You" category because whats most Important s why you want the MA ?

a) Discipline and/or Spiritual Enlightenment ?
b) Sport Competition ?
c) Real-World Self Defense ?
d) Cultural Awareness for a certain Heritage ?

2) No one can make a School of a particular style be where one isnt .

3) Its better to go to a Good school of the "Wrong Style" than a Crap school of the style that sounds most Idyllic to you .

4) Styles usually fall into a few Types :

Striking : Boxing , Muay Thai , Karate , Savate Taekwondo

Grappling : Wrestling , Judo , Sambo , Brazilian Jujitsu , Aikido

Striking with Standing Grappling/Throws/Slams : Most Chinese Martial Arts that still exist , Capoeira , Japanese Jujitsu

yah us telling you where to train w/out knowing what your after would be like drawing you a map to a place we have never heard of...

It may help us to guide you better if you tell us the following:

your body type
your goals in training
what is available in your area
what kind of commitment of time your are willing to put in

"body Type" shouldnt matter . Im 400 lbs and I do Capoeira and Wushu . Your body will adapt to whatever you give it to do , eventually . Is my Game the same as a 100 lb woman ? Nope , but Ive got one , just the same .

sorry i wasn't to informative, here is some info.
willing to commit 4 times a week
self defence in the real world.

dude , we still dopnt know where you are other than "Canada" . Narrow that up a but and we can hook you up . Postal code or City ?

Best real world would be Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.
