Stupid/quick question about box squats.

Do you generally use more or less weights when doing box squats instead of regular parallel or just below parallel squats?

I just did box for the first time and they felt really light compared... But I was`nt using proper height. I was just testing them out for now.

Next day my legs are sore though. I loved them.

I use less weight and add bands. (~50% of my 1RM and light bands.) I do them on DE day, and do them for speed.

You can do them for max effort as well. (1-3RM) :) I usually don't, but I know Kingc does.

I don`t need an explanation. If someone would just give me a yes or no that would be great. thanks

box squats= more weight used than regular squats. true or false?

Like I said.......it depends on which day, and what you want them to do for you.

DE Day = Lighter weights = Go for speed.

ME Day = Heavy weights = Go for max effort.

uhhh, im not really sure. i only do a "regular" squat in competition
and thats way more then my best box squats.

Joker, This "I don`t need an explanation." was written BEFORE your response. I Just want you to know that. We must have posted at the same time.

Thanks for the response. I was just wondering If the box squats were "easier" to do than the regular squats? Because when I did them they felt light. I was able to do MORE weight with box squats.

Is that generally the rule? That you can do more weight with box squats?

He said he just wanted a true or false, so I answer the question that way Joker :). I have always been better at true/false tests anyway .

I would think that would depend on the size of the box
 
OK, Thanks guys. I guess something is wrong with me. I was afraid of that. lol

My squat was never that good to begin with, Then when I did the box squats, They were REALLY easy. (compared...) So I assumed they were supposed to be.

I will be doing both from now on btw. I love the box. I never felt "right" with the regular suats.
 
a couple of inches above parallel I could do a little more, and inch or so below parallel and I cannot equal a free squat

No problem, man.:)

I can't do more weight. Not if I do them right. I believe the technical answer why is the lack of being able to use the stretch reflex.

When you do them, make sure your knees don't come over your feet. Your shins should be perpendicular to the floor at all times. Once I started focusing on that, they were much harder and I really felt them in my hams and glutes. I was able to do a heavy weight, heavier than my regular squat, but it was with bad box squat form.

here is a little bit of my .02 cents.

one........ liftbig says he does way more in competition. ofcourse he suits up for competition, where as he is raw for the box squat.

these guys are right, without the stretch reflex it is hard.

i squatted 455 in loose knee wraps and a loose belt. 4 weeks later i box squatted 430lbs with no equipment off of a parallel box. 2 weeks after that (which was last saturday) i did a 385, just missed 405 low box squat.

a couple of questions for you. one where was your box height. high, low or parallel???

also did you count 1-1000 and then come up keeping everthing tight, just relaxing your hips and then exploding up?? or did you just touch and go.

dont do that if you did, your looking at spinal troubles as well as a major case of hemoriods...

My box squat is less than my free squat. I would say my box squat max is from 420-440, and my free squat is between 450-500 somewhere, but i am guessing a bit.

Box squats are supposed to be substantially harder than regular squats because you are sitting back on the box much farther than you would or could with a regular squat, relaxing the hips for a second and then exploding back up.

You will know if you are sitting back far enough by checking to see if your knees are at an angle that is greater than 90 degrees. If you are just sitting down on the box and not back, your knees will be vertical, or even worse, over your feet. Sitting back like this without the box is not possible because you would fall on the floor. The purpose is to overload your hams and glutes; if you are falling onto the box the last couple of inches, your hams are weak. The box should be 1 inch below parallel for routine training.

Many who think the box is easier are not sitting back on it or relaxing the hips once they sit on it; rather they are simply using the box as a depth check; some even bounce off of it (not good for you). If you use it this way, it will be easier. Read the articles at www.elitefts.com for more details.
 
Exodus; because of the reasons I described above, the box squat is harder than a regular squat when both are done without equipment. The equipment just adds to making the regular squat easier.

For example, my numbers are about:

box squat w/ groove briefs and belt - 665 - 675

regulars squat without equipment except belt; who knows b/c I never do it, but definitely more than my box squat; by about 50 lbs I would guess

suited squat w/ wraps - about 825-850

(btw always wear groove briefs on wide box sqts to protect your hips)
