Strength and muscle size

The short answer is yes and no.

Want the long answer?

As long as this thread is started.... And this kinda pertains to it.... How do I convince a girl she can lift free weights without bulking up?

Show her your legs!

pppppppppppphhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhtttttttttttttttt!!!!!!!!!

BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

sorry.........snort

yes, a long answer would be great.

I know this question will have alot of different views---just like the topic of cardio and how much you need to loose fat....But I'm curious to see what people have to say or have experienced.

I'm using 30 pound dumbells as my heavy weight for my arms, and I want to raise the weight when I'm stronger. I'm not worried about getting big arms at all. But my arms are getting thin! I actually want some bulk to them.

GAWD!!!! I don't understand some chicks. Have they never lifted a weight in their life?

The only way you can convince her, is by getting her ass in the female weight room. There are always lots of skinny girls lifting.

I think it's a pretty safe assumption that increases in muscle size go hand in hand with increases in strength.

If you feel like your arms are too thin, then yes, go ahead and lift heavy.

Sorry dude...it was just there!

The long answer.

You have to look at this issue from a comparitive stand point of two people lifting.

Person A - Increases size and not strength
Person B - Increases size and strength

Now how does this happen is the question at hand.

Person A is probably not increasing there starting base overtime and is using the same workout routine and diet for a long period of time. In so doing this person may increase there muscle volume to a certain degree (slow twitch) fibers. However since they are not shocking there system after the initial 6 weeks of workouts they will notice an leveling off in their lifts after a period of around 3 - 4 months. That's because the initial supporting muscle fibers (fast twitch) around the tendon regions have acheived a level of new strenth that accomadates a bandwidth of weight.

The tendon muscle tissue usually reaches this new level of strength before the person is mentally ready to go to the maximum range that this new level has attained. I personally think it is a built in protective mechanism that keeps use from tearing every tendon in our bodies to pieces. But that's more psych. than phys.

Person B - goes about a routine that is constantly shocking those fast twitch fibers about every six to eight weeks (based on studies at blah blah blah)...then they will gain a greater level of strength in the tendon area. And as the slow twitch muscles group expands in size it will in turn add to the level off weight that the entire structure can support.

So you have to focus on both facets in order to acheive a balance progression in increasing your lifting weights. If you don't then nasty things like tendonites start to creep up on you.

All in all, you have to increase the strength and size of both muscle systems in order to achieve a solid and safe increase in the amount of weight you are using for workouts. With the above both lifters will probably gain the same volume of size if they start out at the same point. However Lifter B will pass A overtime and kick his/her ass and find a new training partner. Get a nice contract from a supplement company, win the Olympia and drive a big ass honking SUV thingy.

Lifter A will still be a grocery clerk at safeway or a store clerk at a crafts store driving a beat up honda civic that has dubs on it and a rice-boy mod kit.

She is totally dedicated and does lots of cardio and lifts on the machines. But she is under that stupid fucking impresion that if she lifts heavy weight she'll get big. I told her last night that she wouldn't just wake up HUGE one morning. She asked some question about pec exercises and said she wanted to know if she really needed to work that muscle. Otherwise an intelligent woman.

I'd tell her to come here, but she doesn't know about my usage. Plus, not sure I want my be-yatches knowing about this place.

How many reps are you doing withe the 30's?

I do 6 reps with the 30's---and thats a challenge for me.

I follow a peramid routine

For example, here is my shoulder routine

Shoulder presses

12 reps at 15
10 reps at 20
8 reps at 25
6 reps at 30
12 reps at 25

Then I do side raises

12 reps at 15

Now I'm not expecting to get BIG with this routine because there's to many reps. but I don't see how my arms would get thinner when I increase the weight on all sets as soon as I can.

My low weight use to be 5 pounds, and my heavy weight was 15 at the start of this year

Your arms are losing body fat, not muscle tissue. Women are cursed with this problem area. You know that granny arm waddle that makes you want to throw up when you see it happen. Well that's the problem with your arms gettig skinnier.

Please be more specific about what you mean by 30's for arms?

Well, her definition of "big" may be different then your definition. Alot of women want twig arms. They just want them tight. So if there is ANY bulk, then they think they are big. She will get SOME bulk from lifting heavy weights. But then again, her definition of "heavy weights" is probably not very heavy.

I have aggravated joints so I recently took a different approach to getting stronger/bigger. I use LESS weight but emply perfect form and go VERY slow, especially on the "release." Judging by the stiffness and cramping, I think that works as well.

No...I have no alias. I consider that dishonest to masquerade under different names. Besides...I'm too interesting to get bored with myself.:D

Lifitng slow will make you slow. In order to be strong you have to be fast. I know that I am a powerlifter and have different goals from most of you...but when you talk about strength you are talkin my language:)

George Halbert just recently benched 733lbs at 215, and Cuck V., last weekend, dunked a grand (squatted 1000lb) at 220. And for those of you that think the "eqipment" did all the work..please dont show your ignorance. These are two of the pound for pound strongest men on the planet...yet the do not posess great size.

On the flip side you have Olympia competitors that cant bench 4 wheels (405). So you see there is a small correlation between size and strength but it is not absolute. Strength is a product of neurological effeciency...the ability to recruit more muscle fibers. Size is about merely about muscular hypertrophy...even if you are only using pink db's...;)

Very good...but what about the sore joints? Going faster stresses them a lot more in my opinion.

Very impressive lifts...I'll bet those guys are less than 5'8".
I am strong enough...I just want more size.:D

Do CAT training. Compensatory Acceleration Training.

Explosive training doing stes of 50% 1RM for several sets of 3 reps. Moving trhe bar as fast as possible.

Theory is the faster you move the weight, the heavier it is.

Like standing on a scale on them pushing harder on it with your feet. It says you weigh more..Do you? NO.
