What would you use to stitch up your own wounds? How late is too late to stitch something up?

I was thinking run of the mill thread and a sewing needle would work fine for stitches. I suffered a nasty gash while hunting and just stopped off the bleeding at the time and was wondering how late is too late to do your own stitching.

Ordinary needle and thread will infect the wond. The thread has dyes that can be midley toxic and will hender healing. Just go to an urgent care and get it sewn up.

if you actually do sew yourself up (which isnt a good idea), sterilize the needle under a flame, and use something like fishing line, or non-waxed dental floss. Boil the line or floss in water for a few minutes to sterilize it, then make sure you keep the affected area clean while sewing. If it is a bad cut, then have a doctor do it.......alot less chance of scarring when they do it.

also....if the wound has already closed, then trying to sew it up would more than likely do more harm than good....just keep the area clean and use an antibiotic ointment on it.

It's been a few days now. It's going to leave a scar and I'm not too worried about it because it's on my hand. It's no big deal, I was just wondering if it'd be too late for stitches to be effective and the proper way to go about doing it yourself if it wasn't too late to prevent scarring. I guess I have too much hillbilly blood running though my veins to go to the hospital over a little thing like that. It's not that big of a cut, but it went real deep and split my skin wide.

Yeah it's already closed up halfway. I figured it was too late to prevent scarring already.

Just go buy some sutures. Check your area for medical supplies. Or here's a site you can look up addresses by state where you can buy them. www.ethiconinc.com
