Posted a question about baking gear.

Have read you should bake it at 250 for 15 min, let cool, repeat twice.

Is this safe for all gear??

Should you leave pin in to equalize pressure??

Heard deca was damaged by heat, is this true???

DOnt know about the deca, but I go 250 for 25-30 min.
twice. Dont bother leaving the pin in as it will melt(already tried that). The stopper will look like iit is going to blow, but it hasn't yet.

Heat it in a boiling water bath-

Guys, a sealed vial of oil is not exactly a feasting ground for microorganisms. They have nutrient requirements just like we do to survive.

If you can see through the oil, there's a good chance there is no bacteria colony thriving in there.

Besides, I think abcess are more a result of poor injection technique rather than contaminated gear.

The heat from a water bath will not kill endospores.... But then again, baking it won't kill them either.

I thought you should boil some water, take it away from heat and then put the gear in, because you don't want to boil the gear. Getting the temp above 160 or so should take care of all of the bacteria.

Well, just because you are heating it in boiling water doesn't mean you are boiling the gear.. The oil will not boil...

-OR- you can throw it into a cup of water heated on a coffee burner.

There's no reason to bake the gear. That is rediculous. I'm fairly sure deca "melts" at somewhere over 100 degrees.. I dont' know if this will fuck it up or not..

But don't boil it...

Good clarification Andy, I understand that, but am not sure at what temp the oil will boil. Better to be safe, as very hot water will do the trick. Thanks.

I don't think there is an oven or range on the market that will get hot enough to make oil boil!!!
