Within weeks, undercover detectives with the Hernando County Sheriff's Office and agents with U.S. Immigrations & Customs Enforcement arrested James "Jimmy" Hutchinson, 18, of 9400 Fox Hollow Lane, on a variety of drug charges, including possession of anabolic steroids and trafficking cocaine.
On Friday, authorities released more information on how the investigation took place.
According to Capt. Allan Arick, spokesman for the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, local detectives received a tip from U.S. Customs in California that they had a package containing 1,000 tablets of Methandrostenolone, a known anabolic steroid.
The package was addressed to Hutchinson, Arick said.
On Wednesday, undercover agents from both law enforcement agencies watched as Hutchinson, a former Central High School student, went to his mailbox and got a package.
When he went inside, agents, dressed as delivery persons, knocked on his door and handed him second package they had intercepted. It was filled with 1,000 Methandrostenolone tablets, Arick said.
"We did a controlled delivery to his residence," Arick said.
After the delivery, agents came back a few minutes later and arrested Hutchinson on the drug charges.
It was later found that the package Hutchinson picked up from the mailbox initially contained 2,000 tablets of Methandeinone, another known anabolic steroid, authorities said.
Arick said Friday that Hutchinson, a well-known Spring Hill bowler, appeared to have been distributing the steroids to older friends and said he was also taking the pills himself.
"We're still looking into that," Arick said.
Central High School Principal Dennis McGeehan confirmed Friday that Hutchinson had dropped out of Central High School earlier this year. He was a senior at the school.
He previously won several bowling tournaments and also played in an adult league at Spring Hill Lanes.
Authorities say Hutchinson confessed to them that he was importing the anabolic steroids from Thailand.
When agents searched the home on Fox Hollow Lane, they found several tablets of anabolic steroids and vials of testosterone. He was also found in possession of 32.9 grams of cocaine, authorities said.
