Stem cell

ok, i was thinking last night about this. as some of you know i lean to the right and am pro life. i despise abortion but like people say who am i to tell a woman what to do. well, here's the thing. our government has given women the right to abort an unwanted baby, well then i think they should mandate it where if she has the abortion she should sign a consent form allowing for that fetus to be used in stem cell research. i mean make it mandatory, if you abort you give that fetus up for research. it's only right. if memory serves me, stem cell research is illegal. well, make it legal with this one acception. don't pay the woman for the fetus, jut make the signing it over for research part of the process. it's logical and the fetus is not going be a total waste of life. i am really trying not to input my feelings against abortion in this only stir up some logical discussion over stem cell research and mandating the signing of the fetus over for that purpose. i'm sure many of my right wingers disagree with this but think about it logically. you won't get abortion to be reversed as illegal so why not make some use out of the aborted life. who knows, it may save another life somewhere else. i can't wait to hear ryan's take on this as well as musclebrains, strongchick and many other known libs. this should turn out to be an interesting discussion.

The thing is bro, you don't need a fetus to get stem cells. In fact, by the time a fetus is developed, the pluripotent ability of the cells is lost, i believe. Let me look it up real quick. I think you mean embryonic stem cells.

i think stem cells only come in the first 3 weeks of life.

And it is illegal to research those, yet it is legal to kill a fetus 2 or 3 months into development?

I thought you can get similar cells from the ambilicle cord too?

While I'm pro abortion (notice I dont' say pro choice) I don't think it's a good idea to use stem cells from abortions. Abortions are a horrible but necessary thing, and nobody should profit from such a grim choice, not even science or humanity. Next thing you know stupid pregnant women will be getting paid for abortions.

I think we should abort pregnant women who want to have abortions.

It makes sense based on liberal logic. Although the fetus is a separate entity that happens to live within the "mother's" body, it is still considered "part of the woman" because it cannot survive without her help.

Well, pregnant single teens exist as separate entities within society, but cannot survive without societies help (i.e. welfare and free abortion clinics), and are thus considered part of society. I think society has the right to choose to eliminate her.

I'd vote yes. Anyone with me?

probably not a bad idea. I'm all for the protection of society, that's why I'm pro abortion.

I'm all for the protection of society as well, but not at the expense of individual rights. We must hold the rights of the innocent individual above all else - only then can we truly protect society.

lets face it, those babies that wind up aborted don't stand a very good chance in society.

as for that clinton quote, say what you want about him, that was obviously a mis-quote. Don't make me dig up all the stupid mis-quotes Dubya has said. It'll make your head spin.

a US bio tech company just figured out how to get stem cels to multiply in the lab into 4 and 6 cell blasts (ball o' cells)

there no need now. thats probably cheaper than harvesting others cells.

is a ball of cells (undifferentiated) an individual? therefore is one cell an individual? then how can you be in favour of stem cell research?

i'm not for abortion but i can't stop abortion and i don't think anyone can. so my solution for what to do with aborted fetuses or embrios if you will is to use them for the stem cell research. that way it won't be a complete waste of life. as it stands now abortion is nothing more than a quick solution to an inconvience. to keep my anti abortion views out of this as i've been trying to do, i say since we can't stop it why not make it:

a. a woman's expence, no more free clinics.
b. mandatory to sign a form allowing for stem cell research done.
c. education, yes teach people how to say no or use a condom.

those are logical and achievable ideas. where are all the libs at? i'm waiting to here your views.

Tell that to your wife who just got raped in the park and is now pregnant with some other man's baby. Don't be so lame.

Abortion unfortunately is a part of our society.....

For myself, it is something I simply could not do.....I love life too much myself to deny another of that opportunity.

However, I feel that there is nothing worse than a woman who harms her baby after birth....example: putting her baby in a trash bag, starving her baby or neglecting them totally. Most likely these woman are not completely there...but when these things happen it is tragic. :(
