Yes, ironing actually crushes the fibers therefor, wearing your clothing out faster. I got a Jiffy 2000 Professional steamer a couple years ago and it. It's also awesome for steaming things clean. It's the best thing I've used for removing carpet stains and also for power cleaning my vehicle upholstery.
Anyway, here is the steamer I have. I got it at costco for under $200.
A good commercial steamer makes all the difference. For dress shirts and linen shorts or whatever just send it to the cleaners though as it doesn't make stuff "crisp". mostly it's awesome for his golf polos and it doesn't wear out embroidered emblems on polos either.
Edited to add: DH steams his own junk not me. Although I have no opposition to doing it. I don't iron much though!

the chemicals used to dry clean causes cancer, and if you really want to increase your chances of getting cancer then live close to a dry cleaning place. i only get my stuff dry cleaned on a absolutely need to basis and seperate it from the rest of my other clothes.

Wrinkles and handicapped people are probably my #1 enemy in life. Thats part of the reason why the ex and I broke up - she introduced too many wrinkles into my clothes. I couldnt stand it.
