I'm tiny/skinny.

5'7 about 120lbs i think. waist is 29.5 inch. I've never weightlifted before. so i'm going to start. I've calculated and I think I need about 1500 cals a day.

heres a pic of me:

My goal is to get about 135-145ish lbs and get some muscle definition.

I'm about to start the beginner 3x5 program. How should I be eating do I need to do cardio as well on off days? (I don't play much sports or any at all...atm). Can you guys give me some advice. thanks.

Welcome to the board, dymond.

First order of business is that you need to eat A LOT more than 1500 cals a day.

The Ripptoe program will be ideal for you. At first, I wouldn't do any cardio, at 120lbs you need to gain some weight. If you can drink a gallon of milk a day, do it. How old are you? Eat lots of protein, eat eggs and oatmeal for breakfast, eat lots of beef/chicken/fish, eat plenty of potatoes, rice, corn meal, green veggies, salads, and then after all that, go out for ice cream, lol.

You should see nice, muscular gains. You're clearly underweight, but you've got some muscle definition and mesoporphic qualities, your body may be just waiting to explode with muscle, you just need to feed it enough.

1500??? no way dude you need way more than that. especially if you're naturally that skinny. You need to find out where you're at right now and go up from there 3-500 cals extra a day. so say you need 2000 then up it to 23-2500 and monitory your weight. Yes you will gain some water weight in the first day or two but you need to let it go for a week or more. no gain, then add 3-500 more.

i guess i should have asked how you came up with 1500? if it was an online calculator, then forget that. those things are about as useful as a lead balloon. Write down everything you eat and monitor your weight. If you go up then keep it there, if you go down add some more and if you stay the same then you know how much you need.

If you're only eating 1500 a day now, then once you start eating more i'm sure youre weight won't change much, becuase your metabolism is supressed and eating more will help "stoke" it so to speak.

Good luck and there are a lot of smart individuals on this site who are willing to help you reach your goal.

Yep same here, started at 140lbs little over a year ago. If you are like me, it takes awhile to get used to eating big meals. Try eating as much as you can, then waiting 2 hrs and doing it again. Repeat as many times a day as you can. Don't worry about what you are eating. Oatmeal + egg whites is great for already huge/lean guys, but at your weight McDonalds won't hurt. If you are EVER hungry, you are not eating enough.

i've been that way myself. when i seriously started weight training, i was around 130 (5ft10). i've managed to EAT my way to around 230 today (with lots of variations in weight in between due to various reasons). the key is to eat - what biggt underlined is exactly what needs to be done. don't worrry about a little fat at this stage, you can always modify your diet and get rid of it once you've become much bigger. 3x5 is an excellent starting point. if you have any questions just ask... the bros and broettes here are the best :)
