Doohan also stormed Juno beach on D-Day with other Canadian soldiers and got hit six times. Once bullet cut his middle finger off on his right hand, I believe; four shots hit him in the leg and one popped him in the chest but his metallic cigarette case stopped the bullet.
Besides playing a character that will last from now until, he was also a war veteran who took some hits for the team. One story I read quotes him as saying "We were more scared of drowning in the Channel than of the Germans."
Oh, and he also wasn't afraid to say how much of an ass Shatner was, about how he was always hogging the camera due to his "insecurities". Way to tell it like it was, Scottie.
