Squeezing the bar helps

I did this Tuesday when I benched and today when I squatted. During each rep, I focus on squeezing the sh*t out of the bar, and it really seems to help on heavy sets. Maybe because it forces you to keep your body tight?

Does anybody else do this?

When I do it I don't fell any weight at all in my hands benching, but I sure as hell do when that bar gets half way down!

I do that so it doesn't roll down my back and rip my arms off. :)

Actually, I think MULE (or one of the crew members) mentioned that at the MM seminar. Must be something to it!

on bench, it is supposed to help recruit more fibers or something like that.

I'm the same way, ESPECIALLY on pressing movements. It helps to focus your intensity while keeping locked in the groove.

A buddy of mint taught me that like 10 years ago. It's one technique that has helped me since i started doing it, and has never stopped.

i never knew anyone else does this. i sure have since i started training. i think it helps take my mind off of the extrordinary pain that i get from my ACL reconstruction leg no matter what exercise i do.

BTW...

I heart spatts

it defianlty makes you use your triceps more in the bench. and in the squat it helps my keep my elbows pulled under me, and keep my upper back tight.

All i focus on when i do rows or shrugs is crushing the bar and trying to leave my fingerprints in them... though thats not physically possible... but i'll show you all!!

On bench squeezing the bar works sooooooooooooo well...and biceps for me. It makes the bar feel part of your arms and you can focus only on the muscle you're trying to isolate. Works great with dumbbells too.

hyper-irridation.....i think thats what its called

Yes, that's part of hyper-irradiation.

For Squats, trying to bend the bar across my traps also helps.

Crushing the bar and pulling it apart on various lifts helps.

Tightening...well...everything (lol) helps on Deadlifts.

For Cleans, though, I find it counterproductive. In order for me to do a truly excellent Clean, I have to not hear, not clench, not think, and not see. I just kind of lose all sensation and do it. I trust that my lower percentage training has developed my neural pathways enough to carry the bar through the move without my mental application. If I tried this on Squats, though, I'd break both of my legs right quick.

try pulling the bar apart also when you bench. if you have a red mini band double loop it around your wrists when you bench. Made my bench jump up in a couple weeks
