Squatting with a belt

muscelove

Who does it? Do you feel it impedes development of certain muscles? I have do because i get a very deep burn pain in my right abdominal When going really deep. So i have to wear one. In the area of a hernia but its a burning pain

I do it...if i dont i feel like my asshole is going to hit the floor...

a lot of my boys in college arent aloud to wear belts.. they say you dont get the full back workout if you do

I use a belt

The last set or so on squats gives me a little bit of lower back pump, which scares me even though its probably only the muscles inflating from being used, just like your biceps get bigger/swollen after curls. I'm using a belt just to be safe.

I used to never wear a belt, but now with squating so heavy three times a week, I use one on some of my last heavy sets, I would rather be safe than sorry, I already have a small hernia and dont want it to get any bigger. Squats and deads are prolly the only time I use a belt.

I do not use one. I have one, and occasionally I'll try a few sets with it, but it usually rides up too high and doesn't provide any support. A real PL belt is different though, I would def. use one of those if I had one.

I use one, would rather avoid injury and impede development slightly. just think if the worst happened and you f*cked your back cos of not wearing one you wouldn't be able to train back at all.

I don't use one any more. I'd rather avoid injury and get increased development than load up extra weight for the belt to hold for me. Just think if you allowed your core to lag and f*cked your back up just because you'd been wearing a belt.

The body's own belt, your abdominal girdle, should be trained and worked to keep it apace with the rest of the muscles involved in a squat. Develop functional strength and your body will take care of itself provided you exercise reasonable prudence.

Obviously, if I were to try to go beyond my max then I'd need to wear a belt/wraps/suit etc. If you do choose to use gear during training then keep track of your separate maxes: eg raw max, max with belt, max with suit, max with suit and belt, max with wraps, max with belt + wraps etc, etc.

If you're nursing an injury, such as a hernia, then the rules change a bit and you do what you must to keep training and to help yourself get as far back to normal as possible.

That is what I've been doing. I'll hit a near max raw squat, and then add a few more pounds and put on my belt and go for one more set. AFTER I've went hard without the belt...and not every week.
