squatting deadlifting with belts

I don't use a belt for deadlifting but for squats I've taken to using it when close to 3-5RM. Decided I'd rather be a live dog then a dead lion :p

Good points here. The orginal poster doesn't sound like he has much experience so some more info out of him would probably help figure out exactly what he should be doing. 1 rep maxs are good to increase your strength but you need some way to train your core. I've just seen a lot of young guys wearing a belt all the time for everything and that won't work out well. I think wearing a belt all the time makes you lazy with your form too.

More info: i'm 17yrs old, 220lbs 15ish% BF 6'1
Maxes:
atg squat 315x3
paused bench 215x3
deadlift 320x5
started westside not too long ago

i never wear a belt except when i pull my sled for GPP work. i don't FEEL like i need a belt for my max box squats. (i haven't tried max deadlifts yet) but i was just wondering if it's extremely dangerous to go above 90% of your max without a belt. i have a very strong core i'm sure (that's probably why i don't feel like i need a belt?) but i thought doing 1 rep maxes DOES train your core? i hate seeing how many people wear belts for every single thing they do.

i wear a belt for the sets when i go above 85% of 1RM in deads and squat. I really feel it's helping me not to injure my back.

Not to jinx myself, but i don't think i have ever injured my lower back while wearing a belt. And i have injured it multiple times before when not wearing one. Better be safe than sorry

Lay out your week's training - we can tell much better w/ a bit more info.
