squatting and hip rotation

after reading through some recent posts concerning hip rotation at the bottom of a squat, i thought id check it out in the mirror today to see if my hips turn in at all. they do a little bit, and other posts said this is a matter of hamstring flexibility. until my hams are flexible enough to keep my butt out at the bottom, what should i do? continue squatting with my current form, or squat until my hips start to turn (a couple inches before the bottom)

Do you mean hip tilt? Hip rotaion has nothing to do with hanstring flexability. Hip rotation occurs on the transverse plain. Any way, I think I know what you mean and yes just keep squating and make contineual effort to improve your form. No weight increases till it correct.

i don't see anything wrong with it...as long as its not extreme. a while ago, I read something by fred hatfield while studying for ISSA that talked about hip "nutation" which is what you described, he said it is normal.

A perenial question . . . this comes up all the time. I wish we could get a definitive answer. I've heard it both ways -- "it's natural, let your spine complete the rotation" and others say, "You're losing your arch, work on keeping your back tighter." I don't know what's right. I have some rotation at the bottom as well. I just try to keep as tight as possible and try NOT to relax at the bottom. Going a little wider helped.

im no authority, but im having back issues now and my PT says it is because of losing my arch while squatting. My flexibility/mobility is definately much worse than that squatting vid in the other thread though.

yeah by hip rotation, i meant losing my arch a little at the bottom. my back straightens, then my butt turns in a little at the very bottom. i havent stretched my hamstrings religiously in the past, but ive started. its definitely not too bad, and i dont really want to stay at the same weight, as im doing a 5x5 atm. ill just keep my increases small, and try to keep my back as tight as possible at the bottom. thanks for the replies

See my critique of Guinness' squatting form in his thread.
