Squats:Bar high or low?

OK, i love to squat and would love to be more proficient at it, should i use a high or low bar ? My best is 350x5 with a high bar. Secondly, where and how do you put the bar when you set it low?

There is a natural notch a few centimeters below the tops of the deltoids- experiment a bit, you will find it...

"When a powerlifter squats with a low bar position, the bar should be placed no lower than three centimeters below the top of the anterior deltoids. For other lifters, comfort and flexibility will go a long way towards determining bar positioning. When gripping the bar, at first it is best to place your hands as close together as possible, to maintain tension in the upper back, and to avoid any chance of the bar slipping. As a general rule, the lower you place the bar, the wider your hands will have to be. Anything placed between the bar and the lifter, such as a pad or towel, decreases the force of friction and increases the chance of the bar slipping. It is to avoid injuries that this practice is banned in competition. Also, this will artificially raise the lifter’s CCOG, which makes it harder to balance under a heavy load"

Your grip is important...the closer to your head the better control you will have over the bar, allowing for a lower bar postion and improving leverages. It took me a while to get used to the lower bar position...

seems to be a conflict in what you said vs. becoming..

becoming says the lower the bar.. the wider the hands..

gambino says.. hands closer to head (assuming this means narrow grip) allows for lower bar position..

hmmmmm

actually I think it says at first the grip is wide, but that the lower the bar the wider the hands... a lot of this is personal preference- personally my hands are a lot narrower than a lot of people I know... some people get a lot of shoulder strain off a narrow grip on the bar... go with the grip you like best and feel most comfortable with...

Becoming, i think you are a much bigger dude than I so that probably figures into hand position...I'm 5'9 190. My pl coach always taught me to grip close, one finger on the smooth. I feel that I can control the bar better, though lately it does tweak my elbow a bit...at pl meets I have been to I also see guys my size gripping narrow, so I think size does figure into it...
