squatlift...say what? - holy crap!

just got back into training after two months off, bought a decent home gym (free weights), but a couple weeks ago bought one of those "shrug" bars the kind that you step insideand has handles on the side.
I had read once about the squatlift using this bar in Beyond Brawn so I tried it out and holy shit! what a movement, kicks ass completely, every fiber in my body was on fire, even my freakin jaw I think. I feels very natural and easy too, because the weight is balanced right down my vertical axis of motion, I was able to put all I had into it and no a lot of worry about form...

Boy what an exercise, this one definitely here to stay, Stuart was right when he said this lift can replace the squat and deadlift, it sure as hell feels like it does both.
Anyone try this? what ya bros think?

yes is a hex bar, if you go here there is a pic

I always been a firm believer of back squat and deadlift, all my life, thats how I have put on the little mass I have!
But man, I gotta give credit to this one, for me it feels better than the both, lets see what the results put out thou, but am sticking with it for now for sure.

ok - so the squatlift refers to "deadlifting" with the hex bar? i don't know, i'd rather just squat and deadlift... i wouldn't mind using this as assistance though i really don't see much necessity.

It's a nice change of pace, but better for shrugging than deadlifting unless you're nursing an injury imo.

The McRobert reference worries me, while great for beginners and the total genetic reject his philosophy becomes extremely self limiting in that it rejects any idea of increasing GPP and work capacity.

well I've yet to hear if anyone has tried it which is what I was hoping for.....I mean how does one really know unless you try it?

I think it's weak. Yes i've tried it. It was actually good for a rehab period after a shoulder injury a few years ago. But especially for a home gym, a barbell and power rack is all you need. Maybe some dumbells. Squat, bench, deadlift = success.

If by 'tried it' you mean lifted with it, yes. back as a wee natty I could rep 500 on it. Never really tried it seriously since then, and sadly it's not an option for me right now.

I used one to rehab myself back into real deadlifting when I was recovering from my disc herniation back in '02-'03. Still not a worthwhile sub for the straight bar if you can do real deadlifts (imo)
