The closer you get those legs together the more you will focus on the quads, widen it and you work the hips hams and glutes more.

True..the wider the stance the shorter the distance the bar has to travel (pl'er style) depends on what you're aiming for!

I've heard people say this...that it was a shorter ROM...not sure this really is correct.

If ROM is from where the hips and knees (the pivitol points) begin compared to where they end...then I'm not sure that it is shortened. When you widen the stance...both pivitol points become closer to the ground...not just the hips. The ROM seems to be pretty close to the same to me when I think about it...but I could be wrong. I may have to play with it, take some pictures and measure...lol.

I squat wide to activate the hips, hams, and erectors more. Three muscles that are much more important in my sport than quads. It also saves my knees...

To tell the truth ive read it over and over (doesnt mean its right)..maye we shoudl take some measurements lol..personally i go about shoulder width..im not huge but i have wide delts...

I was just thinking out loud late at night and it made sense what I said to me...lol. Who knows.

I did a contest where we were squatting 650 for reps and the promoter said that no wide stances would be allowed. I squat wide, he squats narrow. Of course...he is going to set things up the way that HE does them...and that is fine. His point was that the ROM was too small with a wide stance.

My point to him was that parallel is parallel no matter where your feet are placed.

I'll try to take some measurements tonight and some pics...I'm really interested to see the difference.

LOL, now you got me thinkin about this. I know one thing is certain. It definately* feels like your going a lot lower with a close stance because it's a whole lot harder to keep your center of gravity and hit parallel. I think your right though. Look at your hips and knees on both positions and they will be at the same angle(90 degrees or higher). I just think the bar is lower to the floor with a wider stance.

Heck yeah I can move a lot more weight with a wider stance. :)

With a wider stance...I can use more muscle groups...and more naturally strong ones as well.

Remember....ROM in the squat is defined by the distance that the hips travel...not the bar.

I squat both ways in my training. No reason to obmit an exercise or create a weakness.
