Split advice

My gole is 4 days,(m,t,t,f) per week.
Some weeks only 3 days are possible.
??? A 4 day split and just try to double up on 3 workout day weeks, or a 3 day split and just keep rotating through?( first workout and last workout being the same on 4 workout day weeks?)
I'd like to try the 5x5 workout.
How would you split you body in either case?
Open to any suggestions.
Background--40 years old and have lifted off and on for 20 years. It's been 5 or 6 years since I did any dedicated lifting.
