Spironolactone is an anti-androgen. I use it topically in conjunction with 5%minoxidil to prevent hair loss. It seems to work really well at slowing down and or stopping hair loss. The minoxidil increases blood circulation to the hair folicle and has helped me to grow back some of the hair that I have lost. I would stay away from the spironolactone tablets unless you plan on crushing them up and mixing them in a minoxidil. This will make a smelly combo though, so I suggest applying them with separate bottles.
