90% of all neck/low back pain is mechanical in nature, a chemical can mask the symptoms but not fix the problem(you actualy do more harm) they usualy inject a catabolic hormone(which we know breaksdown bad and good tissue)

What are they injecting and where, Who is doing all this, who is the MD? A Spine Surgeon, or GP?
A decompression is surgery, anesthesia, while on test can skyrocket your B/P to stroke conditions.
A simple herniated disc can be repaired with physical therapy, injections as you mention, and simply light exercise and time… Give it time and it will heal.
But not always, of course, then the first step would be a decompression..
I am assuming the only symptom you have is a herniated disc. No impingement, stenous, Disc Herniation as in Herniated Nucleus Pulposus, Degenerative Disc Disease,
Spondylolisthesis, Scoliosis, Kyphosis or simple instability.
You have had and MRI, and X-rays correct?
If is is a herniated disc, not a Herniated Nucleus Pulposus
You should be fine, with out surgery,

there are 2 types of decompression...surgical and non surgical.
non surgical decompression is very effective, do a search, there is definatley someone doing it in your area, in the next 2 years non surgical spinal decompression will be the norm for low back/neck pain. it is one of the fastest growing procedures today.

There are two types of Disc Herniations
Simple
And
When you rupture the Nucleus
When your rupture the nucleus, this will not heal on its own, need surgical intervention.

there are contained herniations and non-contained. the non-contained are when the nucleus pulposus escapes the confines of the anulus due to a tear or rupture in the outer rings of the anulus.
i am not aware of any evidence that a vaccum effect (if you can point me to the research I would like to see it) can pull the nuclear material, which is seen as a foreign substance by the body and is highly irritating to local tissues, back into the center of the disc. what basically commences is an inflammatory response where macrophages scour the nuclear material from the area. that process takes several months to complete. one of the benefits of traction is it helps circulation into the area which will enhance the body's clean-up efforts.
the injections of corticosteroids may help relieve pain in the short-term but has little effect on the long-term outcome. repeated injections of corticosteroids have also been linked to localized osteoporosis.

ok thanks for the link, its a good write-up, summarizing other findings in support of decompression, naturally i'm still unconvinced regarding the vacuum-like recollection of nuclear material, but i don't want to thread hijack debating this point.
the decompression machines are marketed as breakthrough technology, and they certainly do work. still i know of other methods such as Cox flexion distraction that achieve similar results. Cox was one of the authors referenced in the linked article, so they think enough of him to reference his book.
