SOY AND ESTROGEN bullshit =)

New member
Well the last three or 4 weeks weeks or so after I came of the crumb diet

I have eaten most of my protien from SOY

check out my diet

1 eggs and orange juice (fresh)

2 2-3 boca soy burgers with 8 grams of carbs each + ranch dressing

3 2-3 boca soy burgers with 8 grams of carbs each + ranch dressing

Workout

4 post workout GLUTAMINE< SOY PROTIEN < AND MALTODEXTRIN

5 lean animal meat with fiberous vegitables

any way I feel great, yet all internet evidence suggests I should have a pair of breasts

so whats up?

i feel the same way.....i eat that soy protien 95 from gnc......tastes alot better than whey but a lil more expensive though :(....

but if u compare each amino acid profile they match up about the same

i get about 60 percent of my protien in gnc soy powder shakes. the rest come from beans. i dont eat much meat

Soy is Da Bomb for men and women bodybuilders. But look out for a lot more bullshit!

I get leaner than any other natty female I have ever known (and retain pretty decent muscle mass), and I diet on 80% protein from soy and 20% from egg whites. Go figure.

My X-partner (a male) also ate a LOT of soy protein and was a lean, mean muscular machine.

hell yeah!

I'm vegan so soy is one of the few good options for me, I found this place I can buy plain soy protein isolote for only $4 canadian per pound, that must be about $2.75/pound USD .. so it's pretty damn good.. sure plain it doesn't taste so great but I've been making this nice mix..

1 cup of vanilla soy milk (6.9g of protein)
4 strawberries
4 teaspoons of soy protein isolote (20g of protein)
3 icecubes
-----------------------
protein total = 26.9g of protein
(put it all in the blender)

(now if I say have this with a meal of a soy-hot-dog (no bun)

that'll boost it up to 39.9g of protein
the good dog type of soy-hot-dog has 13g of protein, almost no fat, nearly no carbs, and only about 56cal's per dog

comes out fairly nicely and I meet my protein needs ;)

I've been eating soy for alot before this.. I don't have any breasts forming.. hehe.. besides men in asia have eaten soy for centuries without problems.. so I suspect it's mostly myth

LOL man that how I feel now !

I feel like I came out of the closet with a SOYA confession

:)

I feel mildley embarrassed or something:)

i drink it as its low carb with protein shakes when im cutting. it has a whole bunch of EFA's in it too

the only thing that scares me is the anectdotal evidence that some have where they know firsthand of people that have taken the stuff and seen less progress. i know its anecdotal but it still worries me

however my protein with water tastes so rank i think i will stick withthe soya :D

soy

soy protien is great, dont buy the fancy packaged kind, buy fresh stuff at the back of all those health food stores that they get from the farmers. - just like variation said, just add your own flavour. anywhey, soy protien is better than whey, that myth about soy giving you breasts is just to steer you away from the truth of the horrible things dairy will do to you :)

Costco, huh? What section? I don't think I've ever seen it there, but then again, I'm usually just shopping for chicken breasts and oatmeal. :-)

ZKaudio, Soy and soy isoflavone consumption reduces estrogen levels in both men and women. It has no significant impact on testosterone levels or fertility in men (this is in contrast to the plethora of rat studies that the anti-soy club like to bandy around). Soy protein is as good as any other protein for building or maintaining muscle. All in all, I would think the reduction in estrogen levels alone would make soy protein a highly prized bodybuilding supplement, but the propaganda machinery is a strong force. Suits me just fine. While all those other women that compete against me wonder what my secret weapon is to get extra lean, I'll just be quietly sitting and sipping my soy shake!

Here is just a small sampling of the research IN HUMANS that shows the potential benefits of regular soy consumption.

Effect of soymilk consumption on serum estrogen and androgen concentrations in Japanese men.

Nagata C, Takatsuka N, Shimizu H, Hayashi H, Akamatsu T, Murase K.

Department of Public Health, Gifu University School of Medicine, Japan.

Soy consumption has been associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer. The mechanism for this association may involve the
effect of soy on the endocrine system. We conducted a randomized dietary intervention study to determine the effects of soy
consumption on serum levels of steroid hormones in men. Thirty-five men were randomly assigned to either a soymilk-supplemented
group or a control group. The men in the soy-supplemented group were asked to consume 400 ml of soymilk daily for 8 weeks. The
men in the control group maintained their usual diet. Blood samples were obtained just before the initiation of the dietary period and
thereafter every two weeks for 12 weeks. Changes in hormone concentrations were analyzed and compared between the two groups
using the mixed linear regression model against weeks from the start of the dietary period. The mean (SD) soymilk intake estimated
from dietary records during the dietary study period was 342.9 ml in the soymilk-supplemented group. There was a
significant difference between the two groups in terms of changes in serum estrone concentrations, which tended to decrease in the
soy-supplemented group and increase in the control group over time. None of the other hormones measured (total and
free-testosterone, or sex hormone-binding globulin) showed any statistical difference between the two groups in terms of patterns of
change. The results of the study indicate that soymilk consumption may modify circulating estrone concentrations in men.

The specific role of isoflavones on estrogen metabolism in premenopausal women.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence that dietary factors may play a role in the production, metabolism, and bioavailability
of sex hormones and their impact on target tissues. The specific objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of
supplementing a group of premenopausal women who were free of breast carcinoma with a dietary supplement of isoflavones (40 mg
per day) in producing a change in steroid hormones and menstrual cycle length. METHODS: Sixty-eight consecutively recruited,
premenopausal, omnivorous women of all races and ethnicities between the ages of 25 years and 55 years were admitted to the study
and randomized to an experimental group supplemented with soy (40 mg genistein per day) or to a control group that consumed a
placebo for a 12-week period. Changes in their anthropometric, nutritional, and hormonal biomarkers from early follicular phase were
analyzed at baseline and post-intervention. RESULTS: Serum-free estradiol and estrone levels decreased moderately in the
experimental group. Serum hormone-binding globulin levels increased in 41.4% of women in the experimental group compared with
37.5% of women in the placebo group. Free estradiol decreased in 53.85% of women in the experimental group compared with
37.5% of women in the placebo group. Estrone decreased in 55.56% of women in the experimental group compared with 42.86% in
the placebo group. Those women in the experimental group who were consuming soy had their mean menstrual cycle length increased
by 3.52 days compared with a mean decrease of 0.06 days for women in the placebo group from baseline to the third
menstrual cycle. In addition, women who were taking soy had their mean follicular phase increase by 1.46 days compared with a mean
increase of 0.14 days for women who were taking the placebo (P = 0.08). CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that increased
isoflavone intake affects estrogen metabolism by altering the steroid hormone concentrations and menstrual cycle length, thereby
demonstrating a potential to reduce the risk for breast carcinoma

Very intersting :)

Thanks for the heads up. It'll be good to eat the tofu at the bottom of the miso soup again on a sushi run ;)

Great thread with some useful info. MS if you could please tell me what to look for in a soy protein product. I have used some in the past and do realize that there are several types. Of course important to me is lowering estrogen. Is there an ideal amount of isoflavones to be found in soy protein products. I have in the past used soy cereals, such as Nuttlettes which I assume are made from extruded?? soy.

I love secret weapons, I have picked up a few from you-thanks-valerie

I wouldn't mind trying soy for a little while myself. I know I love edimame, and eat that quite a bit for my dinners. Seems to be a very good meal with the fats, protein, and carb ratios.

But for shakes and such, I'd be looking for a low carb solution. Do any of you happen to know of good low carb soy, and perhaps some decent low carb soy milk?

I don't know of any 'high isoflavone' brands, but I do know you can pay a lot more and get "low isoflavone" protein for those that still want to avoid phytoestrogens. There are also "high ferritin" (iron) strains of soybeans around. Personally I would just go for the cheapest stuff that tastes OK. I use the Weider brand (called vegi-pro or something like that). This brand has papain added to increase net-protein availability. As a side note on iron, here's and interesting recent study looking at the bioavailability of iron from soy:

Originally Published: 01/01/2003

Score another one for soy. ARS-assisted research suggests that ferritin in soybeans is a highly usable
source of iron for women who are marginally iron deficient.

The finding, reported in this month's American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, can help make a significant
gain against iron deficiency, which affects 30 percent of the world's population and is especially
prevalent among women and children living in poverty. It decreases cognitive function and worker
productivity and can lead to illness and death.

The study refutes the belief that iron in the form of ferritin in soybeans has poor bioavailability, that is,
the body does not readily absorb it after it is ingested.

Eighteen female volunteers-most of whom had marginal iron deficiency-consumed soy in the form of
muffins and had their iron measured 14 days later. They then repeated the process with soy broth.

Ross Welch, a plant physiologist from ARS' Plant, Soil, and Nutrition Laboratory in Ithaca, New York,
assisted in the study. He says the ferritin in the soybeans proved "highly bioavailable-as bioavailable
as the iron in meat," even in the presence of phytic acid, an "antinutrient" found in legume seeds and
in whole cereal grains that interferes with iron uptake.

Have you guys found a low carb low fat version of Soy Milk?

I always see low carb, or low fat, but never together....

I'm going to try a little soy to add to my diet, I mostly use just chicken as my main source. Also, I eat edimame at night as my final meal, good stuff I tell you. It's fun to eat, tastes great, and it ends up looking like the perfect meal in terms of nutrition. :)

But I'd really like to try some soy milk, I'm just deathly afraid of carbs and fat. :(

a little off topic, but still relating to estrogen.. and man-boobs..

one of my friends told me they pump chickens with estrogen so that they will grow bigger breasts. is this true or is it just some more bullshit?

I don't think that is common practice anymore fatpimp. Large doses of antibiotics are actually much more commonly used in chicken farming and accelerate growth at least as well as estrogenic compounds.

It is against US federal law to feed commercial poultry with estrogens.

As far as estrogens, what do you think of food contaminated by plastic bags and other packaging ?

I'm afraid it is more an issue than the hypothetical estrogenic effect of soy

LOL.....Just by reading the title of this thread, I knew MS would be all over it before I even opened it. :)
