sorry mods...yes iam very sorry..i take this post off..but i need help with a paper...i wrote 3 papers know i cant think...my paper has to be a arugment about advertising tobacco...

writer's guidelines...
1. consider which aspects of the formal arugment you need for your paper:

* background: what is the historical or social context for this controversial issue?

* proposition(the topci sentence or thesis): what do i want my audience to believe or do?

* qualification of proposition: have i limited my proposition so that i cannot be easily challenged with exceptions?

* refutation (taking the opposing view into account, mainly to point out its weaknesses): what is the view on the other side, and why is it flawed in reasoning or evidence?

*support: in addition to sound reasoning, have i used appropriate facts, examples, statistics, and opinions of authorities?

2. the basic pattern of paragraph or argument is likely to be in this form:
Proposition (the topic sentence)
I. support 1
II. support 2
III. support 3

Well no one else is tapping in so here goes. Interesting parallels here. Targeting of minors is the major concern. You take the let everyman decide for himself aproach much like here. Heres an idea, write they paper with steriods in place of tabacco then change them out.

I'm writing a paper myself right now so this is a good break.

background:

It was once belived that cigarettes caused no harm.
ads showed people having a great time smoking and there were no warnings like today.
cigarette's were made out to be classy and something the rich would do, therefore so should you.
ads infiltrated all parts of life back then, they didn't have the restrictions that are in place today (at least in the us)

For the thesis I'd do much like what Hbone said and say that:

ads toward kids is a major concern
ads do not tell the real truth of what smoking can do to you (sort of like false advertising)
the companies are only out to make money even though they know cigarettes kill

for the qualification of proposition:

just bring up shit like even though they say youth smoking is a major concern to them they are lying. You could prove this by talking about the study was done where a group of kids were given a piece of paper with joe camel, micky mouse, and two others and the kids could identify joe camel the best out of all of them.

for refutation:

just say like Hbone said and basically state that the facts are out there and people hacve to make up their own minds. They'll do this regardless of what ads or anyone else tells them.

for support:

you can talk about that study i said earlier about kids and joe camel.

Hope this gives you some ideas. If you decide to use the joe camel and the kids thing let me know cause i have a book where it should say exactly what study it was and when it took place

now, back to my paper.........:(
