First off, thank you so much for reading this…I am looking to get some newbie input into what is the best workout for me so that I can lose weight etc just like a ton of other people ;). I am not completely new to working out, I’ve just been on a hiatus for the last few years. My youngest just turned 4 and I haven’t been able to blame anything on baby weight for a long time ;).

I am 40, 5’4” and currently 197 lbs, a size 16 (ugh), due to a completely sedentary lifestyle for the past few years. I can’t believe I got here! At my very lightest I was 145 lbs, but I was in a size 6, was working out all the time, and looked and felt great (at least to me). Im not the least concerned with the numbers on the scale (well, to a point), but how clothes fit, how I look and feel etc.

I have recommitted to getting back into shape. I don’t expect to ever be in the shape some of you guys are in, but I look to more knowledgeable/experienced people for some guidance, if you would be so kind J

My current routine is :

Day 1 – biceps, triceps, back, abs
Day 2 – quads, calves, glutes, hamstrings
Day 3 – cardio
Day 4 – off
rinse, repeat

My diet needs some help too. I haven’t got totally into tweaking anything yet but will give you an example of what I am eating today.

Breakfast – Hard boiled egg, banana
Snack – yogurt
Lunch – lean cuisine chicken and pasta – 1 cup cucumbers
Snack – 1 cup strawberries
Dinner – my fiancé cooks so I never know ;p

I am allergic to peanuts, so cant eat peanut butter/nuts for a quick protein fix.

I am definitely an “easy” person..as I don’t have a lot of time between work, kids, gym, etc to be cooking, preparing food!

I generally work out after work and before dinner (on my way home as if I got home I would never make it out the door again due to 3 kids and general craziness ;p).

So, help please? I know how important diet with the exercise..and I want to do both effectively!

Thank you SO much in advance for any advice/assistance you can give me !!

Hi and welcome to EF!

My suggestion to lose weight and body fat is to eat 5-6 small meals of whole foods. Start with 4 and work yourself to 5 or 6.

This is a sample of what you can have:

Meal #1 Grains such as oatmeal (1/3 cup) with 3 egg whites.

Meal #2 If you train in the morning have a post workout protein drink.

#3 Chicken/turkey/tuna fish/ with a salad or vegetables and brown rice or quinoa or sweet potato or any slow burning complex carbs.

#4 Same as 3.

#5 Fish and Fibrous green vegetables.

Drink lots of water and have green tea as an antioxidant.

Don't expect to get used to this right away, but try to be consistent. If you fall off, start again.
