Solid foods for breakfast vs. Supplements

I have recently moved to a new city and time is of the essence so instead of my usual 10 egg whites and oatmeal. I have now switched to MetRx and two scoops of EAS whey protein. I try to have another protein shake in soy milk. Then for lunch I have three chicken breasts in marinara sauce. I usually eat another breast before 4pm then I work out at 5pm. after workout I have another metRX. Two hours after that and usually the last meal of the night consists of two tbl spoons of PB and maybe a protein drink and then I go to bed two hours later. I train heavy 4 times a week and do 20-40 min of low to med intensity cardio immediately after I lift. I am getting about 7 1/2 hours of sleep and little stress. Can you tell me why I am gaining fat around my waist and nowhere else??????

I am 6' and about 195-204 on any given day. I really fluctuate weight but I think it is mostly water. What do you recommend that I do. I would like to get cut and then maintain. I really don't want to grow that much more.

How many calories do I need? And should I get more carbs or less. The only solid carbs that I eat are 1 or 2 rolls with my chicken breast. Unfortunately good vegies are hard to come by for me so that is something that I need to work on.
Please help me with a diet for someone who spends most of their days in the city..(hard to cook) also food is a little expensive so let me know what you other city goer's do?

About your morning protein shake. Whey will only leave you anabolic for about 2 hours. What happens after that? And the extra protein that doesn't get used... gets stored as energy... if you don't use that extra energy it will turn to fat eventually. Personally i think those liquid meals are a poor choice if you're not going to be eating more frequently.

I like you fluctuate w/ my weight a lot as well. I don't know why that is either but i can be 5 pounds lighter or heavier on any given day for some reason.

Low to med. intensity cardio is not a good choice for fat loss, at least that's what studies are indicating. Go w/ HIIT training, you'll see much better results. And IMO i wouldn't do that on an empty stomach, especially if you want to keep those hard earned muscles.

And after your workout you would definately want something after your postworkout shake. Your body will be trying very hard to go back to a catabolic state for the first few hours, and your first shake may not cover you for even half that time. Either eat something solid or at least take another shake after.

And about diet, i think you need some help there. There's lots of diets posted, check some of them out and give them a try. Remember what may work for one person may not work for another. So you may have to give a couple of them a try.

good luck

Too many shakes, cut out any soy product. I'm the same as you. I only gain in 1 spot, my waist. HIIT training will get rid of that stubborn fat as well as cutting breads and refined foods. Stick to oatmeal, yams, potatoes, brown rice.

Do both... when I'm crunched for time, I make an oatmeal+protein powder shake in the blender. That's the best carb out there + the best protein out there... not a bad way to start the day I'd say...

what about alternating between HIIT and moderate intensity every week for 5 days? or is it better to do 15 min of HIIT in the afternoonl..and what to eat after HIIT? i dont think u need to eat carbs or simple sugars like weights...

missy..if your gona do hiit training, do it in the morning and have carbs and protein after. maximum fat loss. I dont think afternoon cardio is the best thing for muscle preservation or fat loss.

Actually, your metabolism starts slowing down as the day progresses and is most high in the morning. If you do HIIT on empty stomach you may sacrifice some recently acquired lean muscle tissue. The purpose behind HIIT is that it will elevate your metabolism for a long period of time. So fat loss does not occur while you're running around doing HIIT, it happens after.

Considering this, it would make sense to eat something before as a source of energy. and secondly, afternoon is not a bad time, this is when your metabolism is slowing down and is much slower than the morning.
