Sodium

It seems that every chicken/tuna/beef/pork product in my gorcery store is loaded with tons of sodium. In fact, the only thing that I can eat on my CKD that isn't loaded with sodium are unsalted peanuts (which I have to seriously limit anyways due to carb content). Should I just keep scarfing down the fat/protein and ignore the sodium levels? Is there anything else that I can eat that doesn't have high sodium content?

What will all of this sodium do to my body? Should I take any Supps because of the increase sodium intake? Should I take water pills? I do tend to retain water naturally, so I'm worried that I retain a TON when eating a lot of sodium. I don't have any blood pressure or heart issues myself or have any family history of them.

BTW, i'm on a CKD and am trying to lose weight.

If you drink plenty of water, then you have nothing to worry about.

your completly wrong weiner kid

sodium will increase blood pressure no matter what. the only thing to combat soduim is eat less sodium. the water will just reduce water retention somewhat:goof:

Like I said earlier, i'm not worried about HBP right now. I'm young with no prior problems or family history of HBP. I've had my BP checked in the middle of Ketosis and it was normal. Considering I won't be eating like this for the rest of my life, I think I can ignore that for now.

At what point does drinking water decrease water retention? I don't really keep track of my water intake, but I would guess I am getting about 100 fl oz per day.

actually i have no idea at what point it decreases water retention. i would expect that the more you drink the less you retain.

but for me i find the more water i drink the more water i retain. but hydration is good.

sinse your not worried about blood pressure and only worried about retention i think there is a pill at gnc called taxatrone i dont think thats the name it sounds something like that, and niacin supposedly reduces water retention. good luck

Excess sodium will not increase BP or fluid retention unless you are prone to essential hypertension and/or on an insulogenic diet. If HBP doesn't run in your family and your on a keto diet, you don't need to worry about it, but make sure you get enough potassium too.

if sodium is not so bad as u say it is then why do so many people say its bad and try to avoid it?????

i heard it can raise your bp no matter what over time.

STFU... the guy said HBP isn't an issue, so go fuck yourself.

Sodium intake has little effect in people without hypertension, but may have a profound effect in those with established salt-sensitive hypertension. Once you've developed hypertension, THEN it may be important to reduce sodium, but there is no evidence that a high sodium diet CAUSES hypertension. However there is a possibility that sensitivity to sodium increases with age, so it is good advice not to aquire a taste for lots of salt when you're young since it's a hard habit to break when you get older. Additionally, much of the hypertension and sodium sensitivity is more likely related to issues of hyperinsulemia and abdominal obesity. High insulin causes fluid and sodium retention and can lead to hypertension. But it's the insulin that is the real problem here, not the sodium. A keto diet reduces insulin thus the effects of high sodium intake become minimal.

As long as you don't become overweight, get regular exercise and eat a low GI diet, hopefully you won't become another family statistic!

One other good reason for dieters to limit sodium intake is that it increases the palatability of foods, making them easier to overeat.

If you talk to any IFBB pro, and Chris Aceto, which I have talked to both, they'll tell you that sodium is not a problem unless HBP runs in your family. You need to keep sodium high, as well as your water intake to keep your muscles from deflating. You only need to worry about sodium if you're dieting for a show, and you only need to worry about that the 5-7 days prior.

You need to keep sodium high to prevent the release of Aldosterone. This hormone will actualy make you retain water if you're sodium is too low. High sodium = fuller muscles. You might retain some water under your skin and look a little smooth, but you'll be bigger and fuller, not flat.

"You need to keep sodium high to prevent the release of Aldosterone"

Yup, not enough sodium OR not enough water will both raise this hormone who's main job is to keep you from dropping dead from dehydration. This is why if you cut sodium or water out too early precompetition, it will backfire causing fluid retention. But I really don't recommend a high sodium diet combined with a high GI diet. This combo is asking for trouble.

I'm surprised no one has asked what meat products he's looking at - the chicken and beef I buy doesn't have sodium added to it. As a matter of a fact, I have very low blood pressure; my doctor and I just discussed this again recently - she said I probably have too little sodium in my diet since I don't eat processed foods. I do salt my meat to some degree, but that's the only time I really ingest sodium. In other words, if you have a clean diet that avoids processed foods, you really don't need to worry about high sodium intake.

I am no longer surpriesd when people ask this sort of question JJ. Seems a lot of people don't realize or can't be bothered choosing unprocessed foods, even when it comes to meat. A lot of folks (but not all of course) seem to like/choose CKD because they like to eat bacon, sausages, cheese, 'tenderized' chicken and stuff out of cans like tuna. These are all very high in sodium. Most people don't choose keto diets because they want to eat fresh, organically grown meat, fish, eggs and veggies.......
