soccertraining + weighttraining question

A buddy of mine who's a soccerplayer wants to put some muscle (I know this is not easy) to his frame....I set him up with a workoutschedule and a diet...the thing is he has soccertraining 3 x a week and a game on sunday. I set him up for 3 workout days in the gym...my question is should he work out on the days he also has soccertraining so the day after he has a complete rest day or should he workout on the days he doesn't has soccertraining so the workouts and soccertraining are spread over te week?
 
My advice to him would be to bulk like mad during the off season and use the soccer routine to cut. Soccer is just way to aerobic to really be able to gain muscle mass with constant workouts.

Possibly try a moderate routine 2 times a week concentrating on the upper body to help his muscles 'learn' strength and maybe gain a little mass.
 
I know his pain. I am trying to bulk up while doing cardio intensive rugby practice 3x per week. What I do is train on the off days, but make sure to have one day of complete rest. Making sure to have frequent calories coming in is key. Tell him to bring a sugar/protein shake to practice or something like that. No more than 3 hours without eating, and having some slow digesting protein near bedside will also help. You really can't cut any corners if you are trying to bulk while doing a lot of cardio.
