i wouldn't get a tat that someone else has. that's just my opinion. all of mine are origonal, and almost all of them done "freehand." my first one is full color, and it needed it, but other than that, i won't go for color anymore except for highlights. grey work is much better, IMO, and there's a lot more detail that can be incorporated with greywork.
the best way to get a tat, IMO, is to find a tattoo artist, a REAL artist, someone that hates doing flash work. toss a few ideas at them as to what you want, then let them go at it freehand.......
there's 2 types of freehand work. TRUE freehand is when they take the tattoo gun to bare skin and work completely free. the other form of freehand is when they draw a design directly onto you, just an outline and some minor detail. then they work directly with that and add all the details as they see fit. with either form of freehand, you get something that is unique on your body.
none of my work is true freehand, but the latter variation of it, with 2 exceptions. the tattoo i have on my calf was drawn on paper first and then transferred onto my leg, and then all the detail was added freehand. the tribal band i have on my left arm was taken from flash, but we added to it to make it more origonal. everything else was drawn onto me, then tattooed directly over it. my back was interesting. the tattoist drew half of it onto me, then traced it and made a transfer of it and put the other half onto my back. he did that for the symmetry, and it looks awesome.
